it's an internal hard drive. it had a whole bunch of important stuff in it and...everything disappeared? is there a reason for this or a way i could retrieve the file without having to do a system restore??? if i right click on the drive to check the space, it still says 44GB used and 36GB free space or whatever...but it still says stuff is in it but i can't see it

Why not try Search
Click on Start then(Windows XP)Search
Enter the name of file or phrases follow the guidance and
try your luck.

You better to do not delete or restore unless you got help from friend or pro.

to end information that were deleted from with the flexibility to be recovered you may write over the area on the hardpersistent they were before on yet except you're giving or promoting your hardpersistent to someone i does no longer trouble about it. Plus the completed very last area of what you wrote appears like crap that in simple terms were given run over via a truck notwithstanding the answer is not any if a virus is bumped off totally it isn't a threat for it to undelete itself. (that's a threat that the virus replaced into no longer suited bumped off although)
