Experience! One lesson that has helped me many times was that after you make a mistake with people, just give it some time to blow over or pass and the subject will inevitably change.
Someone else will be in the dog house and be the target of the week or whatever. People are predictable most of the time.
Also, when you are getting off course, you tend to feel it before you make a major mistake. When that uncomfortable feeling passes your consciousness, take note and make corrections.
Friends will also learn from their experience and tell you about it, so that you learn by others experiences also. Or course reading and general education gives you the fundamentals you need to keep many of the subjects and events in our lives in perspective.
Most importantly is to give yourself credit when you do something well; and secondly, don't count on others to praise you even if you are doing a good job with your life, job, primary relationship and with your cat.
So having confidence is partly a personal score card that lists the thing you did correctly and appropriately so that when you have doubts, you can reread the list or recall the memory for your own positive reinforcement.

That I am a good person. That I like myself. If you do not like yourself, then your confidence sags. I would also say that my patron Goddess, Kuan Yin gives me confidence.
