I am a liberal that is saddened by the state of political affairs in the great state of Hawaii. Please read on. The polorization is based on race, and, the worst type of racial distrust and hatred.

It is based on a vacuous myth that white Americans "took over" the islands in the late 19th century. This is utterly false.

Hawaii was a sovereign nation ruled by a monarch and parliamentary system until 1895 or so. Queen Lilialukilani wished to overthrow the constitution and strip the parliament of power which Hawaii had abided by for maybe forty years, her cabinet of five leaders resigned (all Hawaiians), and, an overthrow of her government, BY HER OWN PEOPLE ensued. The American government did not participate in the insurrection on any level.

Hawaii's Senator Innueye has stated his opinion that these divisions could lead to violence, and, a seperatist movement calling for Hawaii no longer being a state of the U.S. now. This would only serve harm to the Hawaiian people.

It sounds like Hawaii may be divided but it would depend on how the people of Hawaii feel about the issue. Just because a senator says one thing does not mean there are many or even a few others in the state who feel the same way. On the other hand are there any people who would actually want to remove Hawaii from the US? If so are they speaking out? Just because people have different opinions on one issue does not mean their are the most divided. I think they probably have common ground.
