Don't really know how to explain but is the threat of washing a mouth out with soap something only females use? I have never heard males use this threat and am wondering if it is a "gender thing" of a sort? thanks

Actually, I believe the that phrase probably originated in the 1900's when women were the ones staying home raising the children. I guess it was just something that no one ever heard dad say cause he was never doing the correcting. So, yes, maybe over the years you would only mostly hear women saying it.

I think it is to. I actually followed through with the threat many years ago when my daughter was three. She would not stop saying F*%#@ so I put the first little bit of the soap in her mouth. I would never ever do this again. First she spewed and then was sick for two days later. Needless to say I felt very guilty. And.... it didn't stop the swearing.

Probably is. Don't know if it because the male type (fathers) either aren't around,or that maybe one would not use such language around them, or they would use some other disciplinary action in such cases...good question.

No anyone can do it. It's not a gender thing. But you are right mostly women say it.
