My baby will be having her 1st birthday next week and all the 'baby guides' say not to give chocolate to little ones. So, my mother-in-law runs right out and orders a chocolate cake from a bakery!! Ugh! I cant find anywhere online WHY chocolate is bad...

I would ask your pediatrician...

Because for some reason chocolate and babies is setting some alarms off in my head...but I can think of the specifics...I'm pretty sure it's on the "high risk" list for allergy...

More scary than chocolate however ...you want to make sure you have the go ahead from the doc for cake....

Between the potentials of wheat and egg allergy and the fact that all the sugar in the frosting will make baby's head spin...you may want to be real careful with that.

There is a great recipe for "baby's first cake" in the "What to Expect the First Year" book...and uh...it doesnt involve any chocolate.

Personally...I have no problems veto-ing any dumb decisions my in-laws or anybody makes if it can adversly affect my baby...don't feel bad standing up to her. You all can enjoy her cake...and the baby can enjoy a healthy one that mommy made special. There's nothing wrong with that!

:)

Good Luck !

I've seen 8 month olds eating chocolate pudding. It's not bad for them. Maybe they are concerned they may become constipated... that's the only thing I can think of. And my best friends niece had chocolate cake on her 1st birthday and she ate it up just fine. She had no problems with it.

It was disrespectful of your mother-in-law to go against your wishes, but when your baby turns a year old she may eat chocolate.

You are not supposed to give your children potential allergens before their first birthday. Thus babies are not allowed to have chocolate, egg whites, strawberries, etcetera.

Once they are one, you may start introducing these foods slowly. If your baby has chocolate on her first birthday, wait four days before introducing a new food to make sure she is not allergic to chocolate.

The exception to this rule is nuts. Because nuts can cause severe allergies, it is recommended to wait until a child is three before introducing nuts and nut products.

I really dont have a clue why chocolate in reasonable amounts would harm the child. My kids had choco cake for their first birthdays with no harm.
They may be referring to chocolate by itself as it does contain some caffeine but in the cake it wont be an issue.

Chocolate has caffine in it so its not the healthest food. One cupcake for her first birthday which is mostly going to be all over her wont hurt her. It didn't hurt my kids. They say not to give honey before the age of 1 lots of children have died from honey even at the age 2. DONT GIVE YOUR BABY HONEY ! at least until their 3+
The mother-in-law wasnt trying to create drama she just wants the grandbaby to have a nice first birthday. A small piece isnt going to kill or hurt her.

Chocolate may not be totally bad but we have to consider the metabolism or digestion power rate of an infant! Further, it is advisable to instill in the child the habit of getting used to consuming what is considered basically healthy! This does not imply, chocolate is totally unhealthy! Hope, the message is clear!

There are of lot of foods babies can easily become allergic to. Chocolate is one of them. Babies at such a young age can also have trouble with digestion. i noticed that my 3 yr old still has trouble adjusting to chocolate.
*****and do we have the same mother in law*****

i have never read that chocolate is bad for babies. i could understand not giving it to a small baby because of the amount of sugar, but a 1 year old should be just fine.

No the infant in basic terms isn't dark, definitely I had to snigger at that one. If a infant's dermis grew to become dark because of the fact the mummy ate chocolate for the duration of being pregnant there does not be a white infant accessible lol

I think at one year, just for the birthday, it isn't the end of the world. Just not a steady diet of chocolate.

It will make fabulous pictures!
