Has anyone stopped to consider the definition of "Idol"? The show isn't called "America's Best Singer". You don't have to be a talented singer to be considered an idol. Isn't this show really about who will be the next popular personality that just incidentally happens to sing somewhat? Remember, singing isn't the only way to provide entertainment, and entertainment is what truly sells.

it is a singing contest with the auditions and going to Hollywood. But then it turns into a popularity contest when America starts voting. It also depends on what there wearing and how the perform the song. Take Sayanja for an example...he has different hair styles every time and on Tuesday he danced with Paula Abdul.

Granted, the name of the show should have been different, because you're right about the definition of an "idol". But they make it very clear all along that it is a singing competition, and the main prize for the winner is a recording contract. The judges are always hammering home the fact that it is about singing - it's good if you have stage presence and personality, but you can't have those alone. So if someone who can't sing wants to be idolized, there are plenty of other ways they could go about it.

This post clearly shows the serious lack of ignorance. It's called American Idol because it's a catchy phrase... don't be such a fool to think otherwise.

The show is about the best singer and the winners are clearly proving that. They get up there and SING for a reason... they don't get up there and just Dance, Act and Model or something. They sing. Stop over-analyzing it and making yourself come off as a complete moron.

It certainly seems like a contest where you get a foot in the door by having singing talent, but stay on the show by garnering a bigger fanbase than the other contestants. It's sad, and after watching Gina get sent home over Haley or Sanjaya, I'm not watching anymore.

I choose the making a track bee. it makes me imagine!!!!!! yet between those 2..i assume americas were given skills because american idol is fixed from the starting up for the winner and that is not any longer honest in my opinion and makes the educate a large scam.

Singing is not a talent and is most certainly not skill.
If you ever have a medical issue and need emergency surgery, let's hope Carrie Underwood can use a few medical tools.
(yeah, right. Good luck with that!)

I agree with racer...it's certainly just a beauty and popularity contest. NOBODY looks at whether or not the singer is talented.
