How do i know for sure if it is the main relay or the fuse or whatever that is making my honda civic not start. How would I clean it if it is the relay. 89 honda civic. I already bought a new fuel pump and it still wont start. HELP PLEASE!!! Any other suggestions would be nice also.

the main relay is actually two relays as one in that car. One relay operates the fuel pump for 2 seconds when the ignition is turned on; the other side controls fuel and ignition. Do you hear the fuel pump run when you turn the key on? If you do, the relay is probably good.

the relay is located under the left side of the dash to the left of the coin tray. It has an 8 pin connector and is bolted to side of the car. It is probably grey in color but I don't remember that far back. You should be able to feel the relay "click" as the ignition is turned on.

The relays don't usually fail on the civic. My guess is that you have a problem with spark and not fuel. Did you test for spark? You can do that by removing one of the spark plug cables at the spark plug and inserting a phillips head screwdriver into the end that clips on the spark plug. Hold the screwdrive by the handle and hold it about 1/8" from a bolt on the valve cover or any other metal ground. Have someone crank the engine. You should see a spark arc to the bolt.
If you don't have spark, you'll have to check the rotor, cap and coil for wear or operation. It was not unusualy for older civics to have problems with the ignition modules in the distributor sub assembly, but it is more common to find problems with the rotor, cap and coil.

Hope that helps

i own a repair shop, and when you turn the key on ,if you can hear the fuel pump running, then the fuel pump and relay are good ,and this will mean the relay is working on it,you could still have a bad pump even if its running, and also a dirty gas filter will make it not start at all,but first you need to check it and actually see if its getting fuel and fire, there may be something else wrong with it,if its not getting any fire at all it wont ever start, check that and then you,ll have a good starting point with it.good luck hope this helps.
