It seems to me that the things that are meant to be happen for us and things that we try to make happen just don't work.

I have many examples, what you guys say?

It's just something people say to get by.

Whatever will be, will be. And it's determined by your genes. You can't get away from yourself.
If things don't work which you try consider:
We carry a model of reality in our minds. When we attempt something, we use its information to make predictions about what actions will have which results.
If our model tracks actual reality closely (and our logic is sound) we will get the results we 'predicted'. If our model is off however, then our endeavors will fail.
This failure should make us reevaluate our concept of reality and change it for better results (a better match!) next time. Some people call this the gathering of experience.
In answer to your email:
Sounds like you haven't been doing too badly. Getting good, unexpected things help a lot, and things don't always work out perfectly, but as long as you end up with most of what you wanted, that is better than many are doing. ;-)

You can not stop what is meant to be. You can only change things within you power. And some of the things you try to make happen that don't is really saving you a lot of heartache and frustration in the long run.

Nothing is 'meant' to be, because there is no one establishing destiny. For something to be pre-determined you need a pre-determiner. There isn't one. Thus, nothing is pre-determined. Things happen, or they don't. Some things we can influence directly, others not. There is no 'purpose', there is simply being.

"It may take many lives for a man before he knows what is best for him, and is able to chalk out his own future without harming himself or others, that he is aware of the pitfalls on the way. So, it is best to trust the experience of the sages, who were filled with compassion and who were moved out of that compassion to illumine the path of liberation. This experience is enshrined in the Vedas. Faith in the Vedas irrigates the heart and makes it yield the harvest of universal love."
