I'm starting to think that remaking older movies is best thing out there. Some of the new movies are just plain ridiculous. Yes there is occassionaly a new good movie like a Harry Potter. I recently saw a preview for a movie called Grindhouse. Far as I know that's not a remake. The movie looks pretty stupid. It showed a woman missing part of a leg and she had a gun sticking out of it. Sounds stupid to me. So would you rather see more remakes or new ideas for movies?

I hate remakes. Especially with horror movies.

Remakes are terrible and show an absolute lack of creativity on Hollywood's part. You are telling me that they can't churn out one good original movie anymore, so they go back and remake a movie everyone loves with a new twist. Thats what you are paying $10 a person to see?
Anything that seems to have a great story and good acting is getting put out by smaller production houses and not getting the big backing that is going to The Hills Have Eyes 2 or whatever concept they are raping today.
What happened to the creative people? Where are the movies like The Last Starfighter, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8Th Dimension, The Ususal Suspects, Se7en, Legend, Vulgar, A Clockwork Orange...
I'm not even asking for Star Wars level of entertainment. The remakes have to stop.
For the record Grindhouse is a homage to the old double feature horror/sci fi B movies from back in the day, its not supposed to be Citizen Kane, thats the point.

i personally don't care for remakes. i guess something could be said about trying to remake (improve?) a movie (thinking it's worth refilming) but two people's vision can never equal each other. while there may be a very rare occasion that a remake might be better than the original, there really isn't a way to gauge on to the other. personally, i can't (refuse) watch a remake unless i have seen the original. ocean's eleven is probably the only one. this one was actually a very good movie for a remake. unfortunately, when i rented the original, i found it very difficult to watch cuz i could not get the feel for it. like going backwards in a time machine, or better yet, working in a store while there is a blackout and trying to do everything manually. o11 (new) was in color compared to the old, and of course very meticulous in detail. you can't really do much with black and white. it is unfair to compare the two.

very bad case in point: the bad news bears ('76) is an excellent film. the new one is a piece of crap. strange thing is, the original one blows it away, you would think traveling forward in time (sorry to use that phrase) would have made the movie better in some sort, but it just sucked. maybe it was the acting, i don't know. and i sort of like billy bob thornton, but walter matthau was perfect as an alki coach, and the kids were hilarious. the new one barely gave me a chuckle.

psycho: good movies, old and new. this one sort of worked. again, i think it was the acting. i never saw vince vaughn before this movie. man was he awesome. he seemed to capture the character perfectly. the cinematography was very good too. so this is a rare occasion where the remake almost equalled the original.

bottom line, i'd rather watch something new at any given time. problem is, other than remakes, movies keep getting copied, only they just seem to be trying to outdo each other.

Grindhouse is Tarrantino I believe

But as to the question:

Remakes of some films are a bad Idea. Could you see the Godfather Being remade with Bullitt Time for when Sonny gets shot, or Gone with the wind with Clark Gables character saying a expletive instead of using the imortal words "Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn!"

It doesn't work prime example: Psycho.

Originally made by Alfred Hitchcock in black and white, around the 1960's. Great suspence thriller.

In 1996 or around then, some one remade the whole film, shot for shot with new actors, and in colour, it wasn't half as good as the original.

But you will also find that some remakes are much better.

King Kong by Peter Jackson is much better than 1970's version with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange.

But as long the idea of a new film is good, its a whole lot better than trying to remake a film.

How good a remake movie is or isn't really depends on how they redo the movies. If all they do is add a lot of special effects but don't really change how the movie plays out then yeah I think that it is a little uncreative and stupid.
but then again if the graphics enhance the story and they change the scenes a little but still keep it true to the original, then the remake can be more enjoyable and fun than the orignal.
It still all depends on the story of the movie.

Remakes, more often than not, are terrible!

I saw Grindhouse already. You have to understand, which someone already mentioned, that it's an homage to 70's bad B movies.

And, in my opinion, Grindhouse was a good pair of movies. Don't just judge on the trailer.

No, people need to let the classics rest in peace. Remakes are almost never better than the originals. I don't mind movies inspired by past movies, but please, no more remakes.

There are plenty of great movies coming out today, sometimes you just have to look a little harder and sift through the teeny-bopper crap.

And "Grindhouse" is sort of meant to be over the top and "stupid." It's inspired by, or is a parody of those exploitation films of the '70s. I think it looks really interesting.
EDIT: Stephen K above said it perfectly with "homage."

for the most part i prefer old movies. remakes are like heated up leftovers - never as good as the original and most sequels don't measure up either. andrew is absolutley right in his opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
everyone has different thoughts and ideas but the older classics are pretty much my favourites. they actually have a story to them, and they prove good movies can be made without resorting to foul language, sexual content, and just plain ignorant humour of some of today's movies.
having said that some of today's movies are really great, just not very many of them. anyway here are some movies that people might enjoy. they are all different eras and different styles of movies.

i think of it is an o.k. theory - human beings have a considerable concern with Hollywood remaking classics yet I merely think of that, in case you enjoyed the unique plenty, do no longer watch the recent one while it comes out. they are no longer erasing the 1st movie from the history of cinema, so which you will merely say "I informed you so" while the remake seems to be finished rubbish. The Crow is a impressive movie yet, gazing it now, it does look slightly dated - it is incredibly not a foul element, because of the fact movies that look dated have a nostalgic sense, yet now, with greater progressed technologies and CGI effects, there is so plenty greater they'd do with a premise like that. I merely desire that Alex Proyas signs and indicators on as director back.

I think original movies are better than remakes. There have been a few remakes that have been as good or better than the original, but those are very few in #. Remember, how you felt the first time you watched "Saw"?! It was shocking because nothing like that had been seen b4! There's just something about things that are original!

I think new ideas for movies is better. You do have remakes that are great, don't get me wrong. But take, for example, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. There is NO WAY that could ever compete with Willy Wanka and the Chocolate Factory...I don't care how many special effects you have. It's a classic, and some should be left alone.
Stepford Wives is another one...
