Promotion is the key. If the vast majority of people do not see these films, it doesn't honestly matter that is was a blockbuster in Mumbai if no one in Hollywood notices

The Oscars are intended as a marketing arm for American films - that's why they have a foreign film category to give an illusion of inclusion. The Golden Globes have a little more - but not much - parity.

I'm sure the Bollywood industry has it's own awards that probably don't include many American films.

Speaking to the BBC Asian Network's Gagan Grewal show, Mr Shah said: "We just don't make films of an international standard."

He was speaking after the Bollywood film, Rang de Basanti (Colour Me Saffron) failed to pick up an award at this month's British Academy of Film and Television Awards (Baftas).

It was nominated in the Best Foreign Film category.

"I really don't think we make films that can match those from other parts of the world. And I am not referring to Hollywood - we make copies of Hollywood," he added.

Comparing Bollywood to other film industries, Mr Shah said: "We can't match the types of films made in Iran for example, Poland, Japan, Mexico or Brazil, Vietnam or Korea.

"These countries are producing the most incredible movies and we are still plodding on with our boy-meets-girl safe, old formula. That is the reason I think our films aren't taken seriously".

Rang de Basanti was also India's nomination to the 2007 Oscars, but it did not make the awards shortlist. So far, no Indian film has ever won an Oscar.

Come on RDB can only touch an Indian citizen's heart no other citizens can understand the depth of topic in Rang De Basanti.Yeah they do not bother to include Indian films in the foreign film category.I wonder why? What about the movie "Black"?Language is hardly a barrier in that movie. It touched my heart deeply. It has a message for the audience too. Then why?Maybe all these all trade mysteries.

Oscars are nothing more than advertising for Hollywood and Hollywood sells to Americans. So films that win are films that help sell more American movies to Americans.

i think its because hollywood movies are much better than bollywood films. bolly movies just have songs, drama and masala and most of them are love stories. but in hollywood we find a variety of movies...from kids' movies to adventure to romantic to thriller...and they are much better than hindi movies.
