There are hundreds of answers to this question:
The salary depends on:
The state in which the teacher resides
The number of years of service
The highest level of education completed (bachelors, masters, doctorate)
A beginning teacher in the state of Texas starts at around $30k and rises to over $60k in some districts for teachers with many years of experience and/or higher level of education. (These vary from district to district)
I am sure these figures vary greatly from state to state. When I moved to Texas from Mississippi my salary rose nearly 20%. Also, the cost of living is very different from state to state, so these salaries probably seem low to persons living in a state with much higher cost of living (but they aren't that bad here in Texas).
Finally, I don't think the level matters. Elementary and Secondary teachers are paid equally.

Varies depending on location.
Starting low in rural areas is about $23K
In a city like Los Angeles with a unionized system and 20 years in a common PE teacher can make $60K a year with just a BA and teacher credential.
