In the winter months we had snow drifts as tall as hree houses stacked one on top of the other and it was colder than a nun's teat! The only thing me mum could afford to use heat the house with was the placenta she took from birthin' village babies. The only thing I had wrapped around my feet for warmth was barbed wire. It all builds character.

We had to walk a mile just to catch the bus. If it was foggy ouside...forget it, I always missed the bus. I was so scared that I would fall off the end of the world. That was back in the days of a one car family and my dad would be at work, so I would get to stay home from school. To this very day, I do not like to drive through the fog.

uphill both ways, lol. But I did have to walk a few miles to shcool, my son on the other hand, nope, he gets a ride to and from each day. But then it was a different time then too. I mean We didnt have to worry about some freak pulling up and attempting to kidnap us.

Oh yes, over hill and dale, through a violent river with a raft to get to the other side where the school was. In winter, we could skate across.
Trudge, trudge, trudge, with nary a drink of water around. We even got kicked in the shins when we arrived a few minutes late.

To the person who says there were no weirdos in those days (that would take me back at least 50+ years)....I hate to say this, but they were around back then too....trust me on that one. I could tell you stories!
We are not protecting our children from anything by having them take the bus. It just makes us feel better.

I think this walking up hill thing is just a conspiracy that I will be joining in about 30 years. Or we'll make up our own. Something like "back when I was a kid the only cocaine available for snorting was cut with baby laxative." Ahh...to be part of Generation Y.

And on crutches!!!! (True - I had an operation on my foot!)
But no, i don't think today's generation is softer - I think their parents are. At our local primary school, the parents drive the kids because they can't be bothered to walk with them. And with the amount of cars on the road, I don't blame them for not letting them go on their won.

Why yes...and I had to walk through a blinding snowstorm in my bare feet!

And isn't it a miracle we survived when we had dirt and rocks under our swing sets...no nice soft wood chips. And no plastic sliding boards...we had those nice metal ones that heated up to 250 degrees in the sun so that by the time you got to the bottom you had no skin left on the back of your legs. No bike helmets, no knee pads. Scrapes and bruises were badges of honor!

I used to have to walk uphill to school and home from school on Fridays. I walked uphill from my mother's house to school. After school I walked farther uphill to my father's house.
