The Bears D would have issues stopping the Broncos. Why, because offenses have figured out the 46. That's why teams don't run it (except on select situations) anymore. Plus changes in the rules lend itself to help the offense. However, because of this, the Bears offense would be hard to stop also. McMahan was a young qb on the rise who showed he could be great (and may have been a hall of famer if not for the injury suffered at that hands of GB Puckers). Gault was one of the fastest players in the NFL, and if he managed to catch it, you were in trouble. And of course Payton was a beast. Not the fastest, not the strongest, but definately the most heart. He was the type of player that made everyone else around him better. Of course Elway has that same intangible. It would be a great battle but the decade of change in the game would eventually lead to the Broncos win. Players are just bigger and faster than a decade before, and that would make all the difference. However, I still think the 85 Bears was the greatest team ever (sorry Miami and Pittsburgh).

The 85 Bears would crush John Elway's Broncos. Remember, the 85 Bears has the best defense ever.

I agree with the 85 Bears. They had the better running back (Walter Payton over Terrell Davis), and the much better defense, along with the new 46 defensive scheme, which could shut down both running teams and passing teams. The only glaring weakness that the Bears had was a hole in quarterback, while the Broncos had John Elway, a legend. But John Elway probably would have struggled against the complex 46 defense.

1998 Broncos. I've researched the schedules and it shows that the Broncos schedule was much more difficult. The '85 Bears were great but they played a powder buff team in the super bowl. Sweetness wasn't even a factor and I would take Elway in a heart beat of McMahon.
It's a no brainer!!!

well everyone knows that the Bears had the best D back in 85 but the arm and patience of elway about made him unbeatable. so I would say 98 Broncos would pull out the victory dance and do the superbowl shuffle on the Bears backs.

Hypothetically speaking, there are not a lot of teams that could compete with the 85' Bears. A better question would be the 85' Bears vs the 72' Dolphins but that would be a stupid generic question - kind of like the one you just asked.

98 Broncos O-Line was one of the best ever. *I* could have rushed for 2000 yards that season. However, 85 Bears put the hurt down on the other teams.
The thing you have to remember is that the Broncs' O-line was built for speed rather than size -- matching them up against the Bear's D very well.
But, in the end the Broncos' D sucks monkey balls and Walter Payton walks all over them for the win.
