When a rear main seal is replaced, either the engin or the transmission has to come out. Sometime, the tranny wont have to come ALL the way out, i had the rear main and flex-plate replaced on my 84 Suburban, and they were able to slide the tranny back to get the room they needed, and it is 4WD. But, I would say count on up to $600 for the repair, but the seal will only be about $5- $10.

If you don't have a 4wd, $300 - $400. Half the trucks in the country leak a little out the rear main. If it's just a little leak, I wouldn't worry too much.
Don't use that seal restore garbage. It softens seals and makes them about ten times as likely to blow out.

I've used an additive called MainSta several times with great results.I causes rubber seals to enlarge and seal better.I got it at an auto parts store, about 5 bucks.

The transmission has to come out. is it a 4 wheel drive?...or 2 wheel drive?. if it is a 2 wheel drive then it maybe 4hrs. labor and oil. I would say approx. 550.00 4 wheel drive... probably twice the price.

your looking at a few bucks,to have that job done.if its not leaking too much, and your going to get rid of it next spring, just put something in it,to swell the seal and maybe it will quit.
