I looked in the dictionary, and the dictionary says it's from a Latin word that means TAIL.
In German the word for tail is used as a slang word for the penis, so I guess somebody thought there was a resemblance..

for the same reason anythign is called what it is called: someone in the past decided it woudl be a nice name for it. Although in many cases the item in question was named after the person who discovered it so maybe the first sighting of a penis was doen by a person whose name was penis and he named it after himself - hehe.
