I applaud your effort to conserve energy. Don't listen to pessimist ignorance.
Just throw your clothes in the dryer for about 5-10 minutes to get the fabric softener to kick in, then finish on the line.

I haven't dried clothes outside in 40 years, and actually did not realize anyone did. I do remember they smell great. I grew up helping with laundry for 6.
If you do it to save electricity, I am not sure that works, since you have to iron more than if they come straight out of the dryer.
I would think the softener would be the solution.

I always use liquid fabric softener in the summer when I use the clothesline. it helps--you don't need to use extra. I prefer the towels to be stiff so I don't use softener when washing towels, but I definitely use it for blue jeans & undergarments.
There is a rule in this house---if you are big enough to reach the bottom of the washing machine, then you are big enough to do your own laundry. There's 5 of us in this house who each do our own laundry.

use softner yes while drying the clothes on the line, but the main thing is ...... don't put towels on the line as they always get ruff and hard either way you go no matter the softner..... you want to b e carful on how much softner you use to if you do not use the correct amount if you have kids they can get a rash same with soaps, useing to much may irriate the skin.. then you will get complaints from that to.... its nothing that your doing really..... its just the way hanging clothes on the line do.

Hang them out on a windy day. They will dry faster and softer.
