I think the Hissing means "No"!!
It would be hard to say, as, I not know a lot about the body structure. Paint can hinder the body's ability to breath and thus could suffocate them. What you could try are those stick pins for sewing. The ones with different colored balls on them. Get a different color for each cockroach and stick the pin in their head. LOL!
OK, maybe that not work. Maybe just a very small colored dot of paint be OK, just do not cover the entire shell.

It wont harm them.And I don't really think that that's a good idea.But you want to tell your 4 hissing cockroaches apart,do you?Well maybe 1 or 2 dots won't hurt.

if you paint the shells on your bugs they might turn into giant child eating bugs because most paints have additives that will morph your bugs within 15 minutes

umm i don't think it will harm them, but i'm not sure if thats the best idea.
