I am disappointed that the "image" of American Idol contestants is hard to find. There's a couple great black singers but they are too old looking and there's a couple guys who fit the "cool" image and sing good but not exceptional...The last 2 years has lowered the standard...Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson both had the true "idol image and talent"!!! Bring back talent and image.

I'm sorry. Who established that the image of American Idol was young and cool? I'm not getting the whole "they look too old" comment and especially about the black singers. It's called American Idol. And that's the beauty of America. We're made up of all types of people....young and old and that's what makes the show. People are too caught up on a certain type of image which for some reason means that you have to be young and cool (whatever that means). The good thing is that all types of people watch this show, vote and thank goodness for that. Otherwise, we would have a show made up of a bunch of Sanjaya's. The reason why the singers, who are still on the show, is because they can sing and obviously America thinks so.

You've got to be kidding me! Who cares about looks! That's the problem with this society, it focuses on the superficial and not the talent. Too many "good looking" people who are tone deaf seem to get all of the attention from the American public, when there are people with true talent never breakthrough. Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkston??? Give me a break! I love Kelly Clarkston's voice but she is NOT easy on the eyes. It doesnt matter though because she can really sing. Carrie Underwood is not that pretty. She is just a typical looking white girl who has an ok voice. All this to say is that I LISTEN to the music not LOOK at it! I could care less about what a person looks like but I do care about what they sound like!

I know what you mean. I love American Idol and I watch it every season. Season 4 and 5 were awesome! My sister and I wanted Carrie Underwood to win ever since we saw her first audition, and my mom loved Bo Bice as soon as we saw him. Last year, it was the same with Taylor Hicks, although not so much Katherine, but oh well. This year, I vote for my favorite week to week. Normally, I'd choose someone come the top 24, and get hooked on them, but his year, no one really sticks out in my mind. Besides Gina, of course, but now that SANJAYA took her place, I am SOOO MAD!!! If I ever meet Sanjaya, I'll kill him. (JK) But I still hate him. And even if people are going to argue that "its not his fault" then I say: maybe, but If he is the goody-goody people say he is, then he would do the right thing for his friends on American Idol. HE SHOULD DROP OUT!
Anyway, sorry that Sanjaya thing didnt really answer your question, but that is probably the reason that the top 12 this year is pittiful--- because Sanjaya has taken all the great singers' places.

Why does there have to be a standard? This is American Idol as in all of us here in America. I think the problem is people believing you have to look a certain way to be successful. Melinda and Lakisha, sure they might not look Beyonce or Mariah Carey but neither does Jennifer Hudson and look what she's doing, she just won an Oscar. I'm disappointed in people believing image should win over talent.

I personally don't think that an American Idol should be "young and cool". This person should have exceptional vocals first of all, have a great personality and then have the ability to produce great records. But then again that's what the managers are for.

I agree...where are all the "American Idols"? I mean, they used to send through decent people, but now, the only person I really like is Blake Lewis! I mean, if you're going to be an "American Idol" you need to have the IT factor....you've got to have the whole package....the voice, the look, and the entertainment value!

well known contestant ~ David cook dinner, what a voice & the way he alterations up the preparations is amazing! well known runner up ~ nicely that could have been Michael Johns or Carly Smithson yet for the reason that they have been voted off, i think i could could %. David Archuleta. he's have been given a ultimate voice yet no longer as superb as cook dinner!

I feel the same way, except I really like Jordin and Blake.
Taylor Hicks lowered the standard majorly. I can't believe he won. But as you can see from record sales, America musn't have loved him as much as they thought.

I agree with you ,but if all that is auditioning, has mediocre talent, that is all you are going to get. The judges don't have much to choose from. All in all, Sanjaya needs to GO!
