Mum is taking me to the nurse for a Blood Test.

I'm scared & don't want to go. Will the needle sting me ?

Are the nurses nice? Will she mind if i'm scared & start to cry ?

Most nurses are very nice and understand that you maybe scared. If you pinch yourself that's probably as hard as it will hurt.

I will not lie. If you have never had your arm pricked by a needle, it will be a different feeling that you have experienced before. The outside skin will respond to any pointed object placed against it. Yes, it does sting. What a blood test is goes little beyond that 'prick'. First, the nurse will have to locate a clear 'vein'. The needle will be entered into that vein. A good nurse will make sure she sees that vein and it's clear and she can slowly push the needle into the vein to start the flow of blood. Once the needle goes in - you will not feel a thing! And, it is amazing to watch your own blood flow into the cup portion of the needle. I have always been amazed at the color. If I were you, I'd read up on it, on the internet and do some research so you will be prepared. You sound like a very wise young person. The more you know about the procedure, the better you will feel. It's getting past the skin (the part you feel) that is most uncomfortable. You may cry and feel uncomfortable, but you must understand that this is something that is necessary - it will help the doctors and nurses to know more about you and to help you if you are in trouble. Most nurses are nice - especially to children- and many of them will give you something to make you feel better (a lollipop maybe?) Or maybe your Mother might do something nice for you if you can be a 'big kid'. They know children are uncomfortable about needles and they will help you to be okay with it, and they won't care if you have to cry a little bit. Just hold onto your Mom. See the smile on her face and know she loves you and that this test is only a few minutes. Not long at all. I'll bet you can't count to 50 before it's over. Good luck to you......

Hey Little Buddy

I was 17 when I had my first blood test but it was no big deal and the nurses are always nice. I told the nurse that I hadn't had a blood test before and she was really good. She kept me talking while she did do.

First the nurse will put a torniquet (giant elastic band) around your upper arm find a nice plump vein and then the area will be cleaned with an alcholol wipe. After that the needle will be gently slid under your skin, it just a little sting and maybe a bit of pressure. Once the required amount of blood is taken the needle will be taken out, another little sting and then a band-aid will be placed on your tiny little prick.

It really doesn't hurt and over pretty quickly. Be brave and think positive thoughts.

Don't be scared, it's not such a big deal. Once it's over you'll wonder why you were scared to begin with. The needle will pinch a bit and, if they are taking a lot of blood, feel more like someone pressing down on your arm with their finger than a needle.

I'm sure the nurse is nice, but it won't matter because it'll be over before you know it. Anticipation is the worst part and you'll be relieved once it's done.

If you get really scared, no one will mind if you cry. Go in with an iPod or something to keep you distracted if you think that will help. Of course, your mom can be with you to hold your hand, too.

The needle will probably sting, but the pain will only last a few seconds. Most nurses and medical assistants are very nice and extra sensitive to children's needs. They are used to such reactions and won't mind. You should be able to have your mom with you, so don't worry. Everyone is there for your best interests. Good luck. Try to get ice cream afterward!

It hurts worse to fall down and scrape your knees, and the prick of a needle doesn't last as long as the scabby knee does. There really is little reason to cry when you come right down to it, if you look around, no one else is going to be getting all hysterical in the waiting room and you won't be hearing screaming, being afraid is much worse that the actual event. Nurses are nice if you don't bite them.
Lots of people tell you not to look, but I like to look so I know just what they are doing, that plus its interesting.
Be brave as you can, it really makes it easier.

Hi
i was also very scared before my first blood test. and it really does not hurt that much at all. the secret is - you must just relax your muscles while the nurse inserts the needle. and DO NOT WATCH!turn your head away from the nurse and your arm. but ask her to tell you before she insert the needle. most nurses are nice and very understanding. tell her beforehand that it is your first time and that you are very scared. Good luck!!

pinch your arm. that is what it will feel like. the nurse will not mind if you are scared and start to cry, people cry all of the time due to the needle. it's intimidating, just try not to think about it. if an adult is coming with you, ask them if you can squeeze their hand or if they can come in the room with you. the pain is not that bad at all, and it's quick.

good luck!

Just the smallest pinch. You'll feel it but it won't hurt much and once it's done it doesn't hurt at all Helps to look away if you're nervouse so you're not quite so tense. Staff are so good and if you're worried..tell them it's your first blood test...they'll make sure to be extra careful. Nurses won't mind if you cry/pass out..they're used to it. Lots of adults faint. You'll do great!
