I have an hyundai lantra M reg, and just wondering if anybody knows why my hand break light keeps coming on when it feels like it. I actually thought that maybe the break cable might need tightening, is this the problem?

The Handbrake light is dual function, it tells you when the handbrake is on, it also tells you if theres a fault in your braking system.
You could need the handbrake cable tightened,
You could need your brake fluid topped up,
these are the two most common solutions.

You could have a problem with your brakes or you could have a faulty sensor.
unlikely but worth checking out.

the switch is probably worn and making contact under vibration, unless it is the brake warning light whereby your brake pads could be worn or your brake fluid level low.I assume you are not driving with the handbrake on.the handbrake cable does not need tightening but the opposite slackening to cure such a problem if the handbrake is not releasing fully thus activating the switch .There is no warning light that will tell you your handbrake needs tightening

I'm not sure about your particular car, however I have an eagle talon that when the brake pads got wore down the E brake light came on as a warning.

Simple to check, take it by some place that will check your brakes for free and have them inspected.

You may well need to have the brake cable tightened, but it also acts as a warning signal that your brake fluid levels are low, so it could be that.

So does mine!!!

I actually think on mine it is because the handbrake cable was incorrectly tightened, that is tightened at the handbrake rather than from the tightening bolt under the car!!

Not a mechanic so I could be wrong!

Remove the plastic cover around the brake handle. The button[with the wires attatched] either has come loose or needs adjusting.

some one replaced a bulb those days and positioned it in backwards the only connection between the turn sign and the brake lighting fixtures is the turn sign swap they're on distinctive circuits with distinctive fuses so if a bulb has not been put in backwards the priority would be in the turn sign swap examine your bulbs first

sounds like the switch for the hand brake needs ajusting which can be found at the very base of the lever and may need fine tuning so it touches the lever correctly
