I have a 1 gallon tank, and all my goldfish just died. Are there any kinds that are more hardy? I get so sad when they're belly up!

Nothing can survive in such a small bowl. You need a proper aquarium and filtration. I personally know 25¢ feeder goldfish that are now 12-14 years old. They are huge, about 10" long. They will live to about 20. Goldfish are hardy. Like any living thing, they need proper care.

Hi Kelley, Goldfish are hardy but only to a point-a one gallon tank is way too small for any kind of Goldfish I'm afraid. Have a read through this site & you might want to also join a Goldfish group to ask the experts advice before you buy any more fish.
have fun!

White Cloud minnows. These are a little cold water fish the same size as a neon tetra or cardinal. White Clouds are a silver fish with red fins and tail, they have a stripe of irredecence along their flank. These little fish can ride out changes in water quality and temperature, where the goldfish and tropical freshwater fish keel over when things are not right, White Clouds tough it out. You can have a little group of white clouds in a tank that could only cope with one or two goldfish.

Firstly, it is ideal to have only one fish in a one gallon tank. Your fish died probably because they got suffocated or something.
Other types of hardy fish are the zebra danios but they need to be in schools of 5 or more so you can't keep them cos your tank is too small, unless you are willing to get a bigger one.
Male betta fish are also hardy and need to be kept alone... so ya I guess betta fish are good for you, but just one per tank.

Actually one of the most hardy of aquarium fishes is a cousin of the Betta, called Paradise Fish,or Comb-tail Paradise Fish. These two species where the first fish that were successfully kept in private aquaria in pre-electricity times, able to survive in bowls of water with a few plants. All that being said keeping even one in a one gallon container would require a lot of work, involving lots of water changes and good cleaning and feeding practices. ----Good luck.----PeeTee

Its a one gallon tank? Betta is the only thing for it and thats still cruel. Im so sorry that the petstores talk people into buying these tanks that are too small for anything to live in. Fish need a filter system. Especially goldfish.

they probably died bcuz they wer over crowed, as you should only have 1inch of fish per gallon. and if you have a 1gallon tank then you can only have one fish. you'll prob find that the fish will live longer if you did that. good luck

Maybe the fish got sick and the illness spread. Try getting one more goldfish, put it in the same tank, and if it dies, take a sample of the water to Petco. They test your water for free. If it doesn't die, try getting some eels or something.
