In the year 1007 a Japanese noble woman, Murasaki Shikibu, wrote the world's first full novel. Called "The tale of Genji," it tells the story of a prince looking for love and wisdom. While there was other material recorded by women before this, they were court records, religious hymns preserved by a woman, etc. This was not only the first "novel" but a woman, but considered to be the first real novel EVER written.

Makes sense the first novelist in history was a woman.... which might explain why my wife still loves her nightly romance novel. (LOL)
