Normally our guitarist writes the lyrics, but I have this song called 'Ego Pin' that is about the singer of our previous band, and his...ahem...slightly massive ego. An Ego Pin incidentally is a slightly joking way of deflating his ego...

L M - I am not planning on making it obvious who I am talking about. Good advice so far. I realise it should be poetic, but at the same time I don't want it to sound pretentious. I should also point out that our 'singer' that I am talking about, couldn't actually sing, so his massive ego was not even justified...

Start off my getting a blank notebook and just start writing some random lines once you have a couple of pages to choose from, pick the best one, this will be your opening line. From there it's relatively easy you just continue "telling the story" from where the first line left off.

Repeat this process for the rest of the verses.

And it will be a similar thing to write a chorus, except keep the lyrics simpler but give it a catchy melodic "hook" (the hardest part). For the chorus I personally would explain the concept of an "Ego Pin" and that this song is a way of sticking an "Ego Pin" in you. etc

Look at song lyrics as poetry set to music. Remember though, what you do will come back to you. So if you put anyone out there in a song, slam them if you will, and they didn't do anything to you, someone else might just do it to you.

It's different though if that someone did you wrong first, but still use caution in how you do it. It can be done tastefully. Look at Justin Timberlake's song, What Goes Around/Comes Around. He never mentions who he wrote the song about but I heard that JT made that song about Cameron Diaz. It's kind of like, well at first, the only person who knows the song is about is you and them.

It's important to know that most people do have some kind of ego, especially if they are in the limelight. I am singer myself and if I didn't have some kind of ego, I wouldn't have the nerve to be in front of a live audience.

Carry around a notepad and write down what you hear people talking about. That's what Lou Reed of the Velvet Underground did and it worked for him.

best songs are about real life, the good and the bad
get a note book and look into your life and find a moment that was terrible or wonderful and express all sides and emotions
