I am a student of masculinity and men and I try to figure out various aspects of being a man.

I have noticed that it is difficult for men to say sorry to someone they know loves them, be it a parent or a friend (although attitude towards girlfriends/ wives are different in western and Indian society). For them it becomes a prestige issue a thing of ego to say sorry. Even when they know they have done wrong, they will do other things (like being nice) and expect to be forgiven.

However, where they really love a person (more than the other person) and can't take the other's love for granted, there men have no qualms about saying "sorry". They are willing to bend quite a lot and leave aside their 'egos' in order to placate them

What do you think of this obeservation from your personal life and that around you.

Expereinces and views of men are especially welcome. Women can only give an 'outsider's' view.

Can somoone dwell on the causes?

I think we men have a lot of pride and many times that gets in the way. Many men find it unmasculine to show their feelings. I have learned through the years how healing those 2 little words can be. "I'm sorry" can heal a broken relationship with family, friends, or spouse. Men need to realize that a real man is not only strong on the outside but on the inside as well. Putting your pride aside and saying you're sorry is a sign of maturity in a man. It shows that he is comfortable with himself, his feelings and his love for those he cares about.

Stereotyping, most males were brought up to be the stronger, protective sex. Tears, gentleness were looked at as weaknesses.
To have to admit you may have been wrong about something just goes against the grain.
Actually women usually prefer a sensitive caring man. I do.
