I'm not racist, if you could see my friends you would know that! Someimes i think yeah that was ok it's short for Pakistani.

I asked someone who is of pakistani descent and her dad owns a shop whether this bothers her when people call it a paki shop.

She said thats what she refers to them as. The only time being called a paki annoys her is when someone is using it as an insult.

I dont refer to it as that - I just call it a shop, but if you arent offending anyone then it doesnt matter. The only people you will probably offend are the white PC brigade that want to ban easter

If the Pakistani shopkeeper wouldn't be offended, it's no big deal. There's a corner shop locally to me, owned & run by an Indian family. They're all friendly, obliging, and work a damned sight longer hours than any white people I know. If you said a bloke on the bus was a Geordie, or some woman was a Chink, it's not racist

It's an odd one this. The use of the word 'paki' (or indeed 'chinkie') is seen by many to be racist. However, being from Scotland, I am often referred to as a Scot and I don't find this in the least bit offensive and my Australian friends are not bothered about being called Aussies either. It's just a shortening of Scottish in the same way that 'paki' is a shortening of Pakistani. I guess it's in the way it's said.

I don't think so. I have a friend that goes so far out of her way NOT to be racist that she will actually make things more difficult. If she's trying to point someone out in a crowd, she won't use any type of racial description which would make it so much easier. If she's trying to point out the one black guy in a crowd of white people, she REFUSES to say 'the black guy'. She'll go through a ton of other descriptions before she says his skin color and waste everyone's time. She'll describe his clothes, height, build, etc.. Finally, I'll I have to ask, 'Is is the ONE black person standing there?" and she'll quietly say 'yes' as if I'm the racist one for pointing that out.

There's NOTHING racist about describing someone/someplace by using race/culture as a description. It makes it fast and easy. In your case, I probably would have said 'the Pakistani place' rather than 'pakishop' but that's just me. Paki is just a shortened form of Pakistani, as long as you weren't trying to be insluting, there's nothing wrong with it.

No I don't think that you would be classed as a racist I think the term pakishop is a general term used for the corner shop and is a term that has somehow been picked up and used by many not meaning any harm by it so I wouldn't feel guilty about it.

Nope I don't think you racist, My friend is married to a pakistani and she calls it the pakishop so does he, He doesn't get offended at all its just an abbreviation,

It only racist if you use the term in a nasty offencive way

it may be short for pakistani but you know that people use it in an offensive way so even if you didn't mean it nastily you will come across as racist to other people. if you know the owner then call him by his name or the name of the shop. i don't think he'd be that keen on you if he knew how you referred to his shop.

I don't think you sound racist. Mind you, I wouldn't say something like that too loudly, you never know who's listening. This country is so PC these days, people take offence to everything. I'm Scottish, but you're more than welcome to call me a jock if you want!

Sound pretty inoffensive to me but fashions .. styles .. change .. maybe not too courteous now that we've got religious and nationalist fundamentalists blowing each other up and looking for Respec!
