During the normal course of using a computer - files are stored in fragments spread across the hard drive. By running a defragmenting tool, the system goes and pulls related fragments closer together and generally tidies up.

Windows comes with it's own defragger under Accessories/System Tools in the start menu, if you run it - you must not run anything else and it's best to leave the PC alone. By using the PC at the same time as the tool runs, you're creating/altering fragments and the tool will keep restarting.

As you use your computer, there are litle gaps left between programs, as different files are deleted. Defragmenting a computer keeps put all the remaining files on the hard drive and shoves them together to let the computer run faster. I generally defrag my computer at least 2 times a month

Disk Defragmenter consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk, so that each occupies a single, contiguous space on the volume. As a result, your system can gain access to your files and folders and save new ones more efficiently. By consolidating your files and folders, Disk Defragmenter also consolidates the volume's free space, making it less likely that new files will be fragmented. Lets say you have to look for a file, if you have dfragmented your hardisk it will be found more quickly.
