Is it safe to end most processes? Cause tmy computer has been freezing up lately and was wondering if this could be the cause. Anyone, know? I'm scared to end processes cause not sure if it will stop the program from running for good or temporarily.

On the applications tab it only has one and that's me being online but in the processes tab there a many. I have the Norton Anti-Virus and do fullsystem scans often and it says I don't have any virus or if it finds one it catches and fixes. I do tools-internet-options erase temp files, done the disc clean up, but for some reason my computer still freezes up every now and then. If you answered already and have any other advice pls email. Other ppl's suggestions would be greatly appreciated. And for the other person who said do run, msconfig, erase ones that are on startup tab I just tried, restarted my comp, but they're all still there. How come?

Listen to me carefully....the answer is NOOOOOOOOO.
that shouldn't even be the last thing u should do.
do not do that.
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
sorry i was brief before...didn't have much time......
your computer could be running slow because of unnecessary programs running under the processes tab. some of the answers below are commenting about the applications tab and not the processes tab. spyware, malware, adware or other harmful programs might be seen under the processes tab. but u shouldn't close 'em unless u know for sure.....below is a site that i would use to find out if they are safe or not. in the search just type in a process name and it will show u if its safe and all the info u might need about that specific program. good luck and regardless of what people say on here do not just randomly close those programs.....some of those programs are extremely important. the site below will give u all the info about the programs and it will suggest if you should delet them and how.
to make your pc run little faster...uninstall everything u are not using......download and run "spybot" (from download.com)....download and run "adware".......
after u remove all the unnecessary programs from your computer go to......control panel.......click on "performance and maintenance........click on "rearrange items....to run faster"........and click on "defragment".
its also a good idea to install a program called "cclearner"...its not on download.com anymore but google it and u will find it easily.....
all of these programs are free and safe.

Hi Queen! Albert here! Well i guess you are telling about the Windows Task Manager. If you are in the "Applications Tab" then you would see that listed in there are the application currently open or otherwise you are using. In this tab you can practically be able to identify most application you can shut down.
But be careful if you are in the "Processes Tab" you might not be able to identify most of the processes which windows loads on start-up, shutting them down may cause a little problem on your part, this should be left to you pc tech. But usually here in this tab an expert may see process which should not be there and running such as viruses and malwares.
I believe your frequent hanging/freezing could be an infection problem. Best you run a full antivirus and antispyware scan. Provided they are up to date i.e they are constantly being updated prior to the freeze problems you are having right now. Your antivirus and antispyware would be able to identify bad processes running on your pc and remove them.
Let me know if this helped I would be willing to help much much further.

When I press cntrl-alt-del on the processes tab there's many items listed..
It is not safe 2 end most of the processes...
U have 2 stop the processes, which r not responding only.
And the best solution 4 u r PC (I know about u r naughty PC..it is always troubling u, by freezing...) is Format your hard drive and re-install Windows.

with ctrl+alt+del you are opening Task Manager. In this u can end or close a program which is Not Responding.
Some times we opens a lots of programs on our system. This cause to the slow function of the system as it requires a lot of memory for whatever func. you do on a particular program.
In Task Manager just click on the program you want to close and click End Task button. The computer will close that program then.
To be on the safer side, save your open files frequently (if the file size is big then before opening a new window, save that file) and try to open less programs at one time.

"Is it safe to end most processes?" NO
"my computer has been freezing up lately'" means your PC is infected with "malware".
Best fix? Format your hard drive and re-install Windows. Then, get AVG, Windows Defender, Spybot Search & Destroy, Ad Aware, Spyware Blaster and Zone Alarm. They're all free. Learn how to use them and run all security tests daily.
Google for them.

If you changed the hard drive then you missed a step. Get a new windows 7 or wait for Windows 8

Yes! you can stop those annoying process by pressing ctrl+alt+del ! but the one related to system configuration..dont stop it..if you stopped it it wont hurt your computer...and if it does than restart iss the only medicine!
try this one which will sort your problem forever!
click start and press run: type msconfig
nw click on the on the startup ...and stop those softwares which annoy at startup!

ok, most people are going to say not to, but the worst that can happen is a blue screen and a shutdown which could result in data loss. if you are trying to find out about processes, you can google them and see what comes up.
task manager sucks, i success process explorer: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/ProcessExplorer.mspx
there's lot's of features you can use to show where the programs are, what they are doing, and to shut them down. you can even use it instead of your task manager. if it was bad, would microsoft have it on thier site?

I would definitely say you have too many things running. I would try to figure out what they are and close whatever you are not using at that time.

Dont end processecs, unless it says like "firefox.exe" and you want to end firefox. But if your computer is going slow, its probobly spy-ware or a virus.
