You should dial your provider (ISP) first, give your username and password. Most modem come along with dialing tools, find it in the CD and install it. Or else, you can go to Control Panel > Network Connection > Create New Network Connection and follow the wizard instruction.

1. Check for spyware or trojan infections. These malwares when they get a foothold would normally disable the winsock file of windows. This winsock file is actually the file used by windows to connect to the internet. Why does malwares do that? so that you would not be able to update your antivirus and antispywaresoftwares.

I would advice you try to run a full system scan first with your antivirus and afterwards with your antispyware. Another advice is try runnin the antispyware and antivrus in safemode. This way the offending malware would be more vulnerable to removal.

I have tried Spyware Terminator (free), once you run it it would fix the winsock problem and you would be able to connect once more to the internet.

2. Call you internet provider maybe there is trouble with their lines or transmission.

3. Go to "Start" then Control Panel, then Network Connection. Then right click on you connection and click on "Repair". this would repair your connection if there is a simple problem with you default connection.

Hope this works!

There are alot of good places to start from the others,

I have seen this alot and "usually" boils down to a WEP issue,

I'm basically reading, It says it connects but "low/no connectivity" The wireless see the router but can't get past it..

In addition to what others said, Go into your router config (usually 192.168.0.1) get the manual to be sure.

Find the wireless setting area, there "should" be a WEP area (also verify you are connecting to your router) check SSUID (Name of the router broadcasted)

If the WEP password is ******* change it to something you like..WRITE IT DOWN.

Go to your laptop, right click on your routers signal, some where in your config/properties (there abouts) there should be a place to enter this WEP code.....

I read alot of this same problem here "usually" a WEP thingy

Anywho just another thought,
Hope this helps

Do not set a fixed address, on a cable modem the connection should set up an address for you, Try checking with your ISP, or the modem manufacturers if you purchased it yourself, you may have DHCP turned off (this is where you obtain an address automatically) on the modem.
