I can't remember the exact scheme but it has to do with the anion. I rememeber the first catagory is Native Elements and the other catagories include Oxides, Sulfides, (possibly) Sulfates, (probably) Carbonates, Tungstates, and other "ates" finally ending with Silicates (which is the most important group).

There are many different classes of minerals: silicates, elements, oxides, phosphates etc. It would be best if you got a book of minerals.

An the silicates are divided into mesodesmic,anisodesmic and isodesmic.
