I have a clipboard begging to be altered, turned into something arty/crafty/practical - but am struggling with ideas - what could I do to my plain brown wood clipboard to make it funky and functional at the same time?!

Base-coat it with acrylic paint, then cover with crackle glaze medium, dry with a heat gun then decoupage with paper scraps and ephemera.

Also, have a look at Tim Holtz's website for loads of "altering" ideas.

Not sure about the stickers in case they impair the clipboard itself.

Just a little bit of painting here and there would spice it up. Stickers would be great too, but only where they wont get in the way if they start to peel.

buy some fabric and cover it

paint it

make a collage on it

draw all over it with permanent marker

Cover it with funky stickers

...just make sure it's a smooth surface when you're finished...
Consider distressing your design with a piece of sand paper to flatten it. OR just do it to the side that you don't write on.

Well, polymer clay could be used in various ways to alter it.

You could just make little "things" from the clay (maybe from molds), then glue them onto the open top area, or onto the clip part, etc.

Or you could "cover" the whole area (or just part of it) with a flat sheet of patterned polymer clay, etc.

You might get some more ideas from looking at this page at my site on making "notebook and journal covers" and other similar things:

...and maybe this one too:

(and this page has more on just "covering" wood with polymer clay in general... or metal, if you're covering any metal parts:

... click on WOOD or on METAL )

paint it, then add glue on rhine stones like they sell to decorate cell phones, it will still work for you if you only use the stick on stones around the edges or at the top, you could glue silk flowers on to the clip area i think. or you could decopage the whole thing with scrap book papers or photos or various pictures from books and magazines.
