When there is a complicated question on here the very clever answers seem to come some way down when people have had time to check out the answer and make themselves seem very bright.....I like the first answers better.

It is the tangential velocity that is responsible for the proper motion. If the distance to the star is known, the angular velocity associated with the proper motion can be converted to a tangential velocity using simple trigonometry. On the other hand, the radial component of the velocity is responsible for a Doppler shift of the spectral lines that can be used to determine it directly, even if the distance is unknown.

Have you noticed some people aren't on 24/7 and some are halfway around the world so by the time they see the question the other half of the world has had time to answer.
And further; I've tried to answer a question that had no answers only to find 13 or 14 by the time I edit and post it.
But I will agree some short quick answers are delightful even if the answer is a tangent to the intended answer.

Have you ever noticed, some people are very quick to answer with a rubbish answer, that has no basis in fact?

well, i havn't even really read any of the other questions but if there r questions that r complicated, i tell the truth or from experience. not just saying what the others said. half the time, i think they r all wrong........
