Easy
Tell that person that all units must be the same.
Units must match.
You can not add, subtract, multiply, or divide different units. You must first convert to the same units before doing the math. In your case the units will be in either cm or inches, but not both.

Hope this helps.

you convert ether the cm or the inches to be the same unit. after that take the differences in the coversion and multiply them by 12x3 (or 36).
Then once you do this tell the person that this is the true answer and show how you got it.

Area formula

A + L X W

finst convert th 3 inches to centimeters

1 inch = 2.54 centimeters

Multiply 2.54 times 3

2.54 x 3 = 7.62 centimeters

Multiply 12 times 7.62 to get the area

12 x 7.62 = 91.44 centimeters

The area is 91.44 centimeters

whenever you do multiplication, you have to ensure that the units of the multipliers are same. if they are of different units you have to convert in to same units, then only you can multiply
for example we cannot multiply centimetre and metre.
