Being from Australia, West Virginia makes me think of two things:
1. Your Civil War - Wasn't West Virginia fighting for the North, and Virginia for the South?
2. John Denver - great song with WV mentioned.

But from some of the other answers, it sounds like a top place.

John Denver and the seventies.

Almost heaven, West Virginia, Blue Ridge Mountains, Shenandoah River.

Rocky Mountain High just popped up too!

1. John Denver
2. Mountain
3. Flea market
Random, I know. There's a John Denver song that has the lyric "West Virginia" in it. And the one time that I've went there, I remember lots of mountains and then stopping by at a flea market.

I think about it as my home state. I'd move back in a second if they had the kind of job opportunities I have here in Maryland. The people are the nicest in the world.

I think of my home state, and my home town of Huntington. I was born there and lived there until I was 30. That was almost 23 years ago. I miss it sometimes, but i may not ever be able to go back there to live. It is a pretty little city, though, and I am proud to be able to call it my hometown! *sm* Thanks for asking this question!
