i use them for experiments every day. it might also matter how they are genetically modified. technically, people have modified the genomes of domesticated animals by breeding the biggest and strongest ones together. however, this method breeds whole genomes rather than modifying individual genes. because people realize there are serious risks to unregulated genetic engineering (especially when not all the effects are known), there are guidelines to producing and using genetically engineered organisms for broad or public use. as with most science, it really depends on what you use it for and how careful you are.

We as humans have been genetically modifying organism as long as we have been growing them in agriculture and as pets. Just look at the differences in our lines of dogs. The only real difference now is that instead of cross breeding plants and animals we can pick out the exact trait that we want and insert it. With time we will be better at this and the rewards will be great. Like fire, it can either warm you home and cook your food or it can burn down your house. It is always good to be careful with all of our technologies.

I am greatly in favor of them. Yes, all science tends to be abused. But the advantages generally outweigh the abuses. Do you use electricity? Some people use it to torture or kill others. But I use electricity almost every single day. It is a wonderful tool.

Some day we will modify organisms to make them easier to grow in more extreme environments, or to produce cheaper and much needed medicines. Drug costs are exorbitant. Imagine harvesting crops that produce the pharmceuticals you might need to stay healthy.

Imagine crops that can survive drought, frost, have a longer shelf life, don't bruise easily, and are more nutritious and taste better. What is wrong with any of those things?

they are the organisms which have been modified by men for specific purpose.

It may be to make the species strong to fight diseases - such as genetically modified hen in poultry farm.

It may be to gain better yield - genetically modified cow to give more milk. Genetically modified plants to give more and larger fruits and seeds.

Malicious purposes = Modified germs like anthrax to spread diseases in the targeted country.

To give multiple yield - Plants which give medicinal roots and at the same time fruits.

Nature does modification in geans called evolution. Evolution is slow process. Genetically modified organisms are result of human intervention in nature's process. Evolution is a process which is for the benefit of the organism itself, and helps in its existence and survival. However, the genetically modified organisms are for benefit of humans.

scary. yes, there are great advantages to such research, but at the end of the day it's only going to be abused like every other great invention

If it benefits me without any harm, it has to be good. Just like if chickens had more meat to be eaten without fearing that it has more chemicals, then it is cloud nine for me.

well, i find GMOs ok....i mean, there are like GM tomatoes and GM corn and everything, which seem to be doing fine. and they do say there are health, economic benefits and so on. so i guess if there are no harmful side-effects then sure!
