My theory is that people who say this have secret homosexual desires.
They think that as long as having gay thoughts is a conscious choice, they will be able to control their same-sex lusts.

Okay, my answer will upset some people. I am 50 years old. As a child, I was taught that homosexuality is immoral. I was taught this by family, in Church and in society. Simply put, a homosexual was looked down upon as was a rapist as was a child molester...all three are immoral acts. Not saying they are all identical behaviors, but all were viewed as immoral acts.
When the Gay Rights folks finally got momentum going, they were able to convince many Americans that if a person is anti-gay, that person is homophobic. Which is simply not true and prevents further discussion..
I think the slam of being labeled homophobic has silenced many people.
I have counseled many gay people. I know their struggles and discrimination. I do not believe a person chooses to be gay. Many of the clients I work with have HIV/AIDS and I've been to too many funerals.
I can't say that most of the gay clients I've worked with have convinced me they are happier than most Americans. But I could also say that most of the straight clients wouldn't convince me that they were happier that most Americans either. Many people come into therapy when the pain gets too severe.
I wish "liberal" people would try to understand and respect those of us who see homosexuality as a moral issue. I don't expect either side would be converted, but I think being able to honestly say "I think that's wrong and against my beliefs" would do far better than being called homophobic.

Its the only way religious people can justify their hatred towards homosexuals. By saying "it is a choice" allows them to come up with the concept of homosexuality being a sin. It makes homosexuals look like deviants "for choosing to be unlike everyone else".
If a genetic and/or biological factor was found, then it would make life difficult for the religious right, as it would prove that homosexuality isn't a choice.
Even those who try to "choose against being gay" fail. Millions of pounds are poured into ex-gay ministries, and there is no scientific evidence that they've succeeded. What about those people who have tried so hard (sometimes spending thousands) to change but fail?

Because people think they need answers to everything. If they said it being gay was something we are born with then it becomes medical, it it's medical then there is a "cure" or a way to change it. I like when they call it a preference. We all like different things. You might like or dislike sweets, or cats or boys or girls. Okay well that's really over simplifying it, but you get the point. But there is no good answer, either you have a choice, a preference, or a medical condition. The important thing is that you are proud of who you are and don't let what others think effect your life.

I'm straight and I don't believe its a choice. We are who we are. I might not have known this had I not witnessed a close friend struggle with his identity. I loved this guy dearly. He was from Alabama and his family was highly conservative, Christian and the most cruel people I've ever encountered. I've since lost touch with him. I hope he's happy and living a wonderful life. He made me LOVE gay people. If we had to struggle half as much, we'd never make it.
If straight people hate gay people so much..why do they keep makin em? ;)

There is no evidence that it is a choice. You making the statement is making all these other people respond in a defensive matter depending on their own morals or lack thereof. Why don't you tell us why you think it is a choice and then we will see if your logical reasoning works out or not.
Isn't the difference between doing what comes naturally and principled self-restraint called civilization? Animals do what comes naturally.

Deep thought. A lot of time was put into that. Really deep.
And so rich, too, with history. A careful and meticulous analysis of the history of how homosexuality has been viewed in Western civilization.
So, ........... are you more civilized than civilization itself?

I think that it is because Christians want to believe their God is kind and would not create people simply to damn them. They also believe that being gay is "evil". To solve this problem they decide that being gay MUST be a choice, because otherwise large sections of their belief structure falls apart.
