only in one file. This is one the screen and on the printout. I have one inch margins and everything I can find is 100% that might scale and paper is shown as 8.5" wide and print width is shown on the ruler as 6.5. But when viewed on the screen there is much white space to the right, as if the paper were about 10" wide and when it prints the printing is only about 5" wide. In other words, it prints like it looks and I can't find a place to tell it it is being stupid.

I have checked printer properties, paper size, looked for scaling, etc. What bothers me is that it looks on the screen like it does on paper - a 1" left margin and a 3" or so right margin, even though the setting is for 1" right and the ruler shows the width for typing as 6.5"

Always use print preview.
And if you are uncomfortable using the ms word use some other editor. There are many other editors such as wordpad, notepad and in openoffice.

Also look at Page Setup within Word for that specific document as you may be inadvertently using a template of some kind copied over from another file. View page layout from Word then go to printer settings. Always use Print Preview to check if any adjustment or alteration to your doc is having any impact on the layout. Can sometimes be the symptom of MS Word installation files corrupted in registry- reinstall or detect/repair may correct.

Check the printer properties when the document is open. That's often saved with the document.

i would just Ctrl+A to select all and open a new document, or notepad and paste it. You might also try the different modes in paste special (unformatted text comes to mind). then just reformat it to look as you want.
