say he invests x in stock a
and then 1000-x in stock b

total dividend = dividend from stock a + div from stock b
80 = .05(x) +.1(1000 -x)
Solve for x
that will be the answer

First, consider the information:

There are $1,000 to invest. Lets say amount x was invested in Stock A and therefore 1000-x was invested in Stock B.

$80 dollars is the total dividend; therefore, he earns $80 dollars from 5% on x amount invested in Stock A plus 10% on 1000-x amount on Stock B.

The resulting formula:

80 = .05(x)+.1(1000-x)
= .05x+100-.1x
80 = 100-0.05x
-0.05x = -20
-0.05x/-0.05 = -20/-0.05
x = 400
1000-x = 600

Therefore, he invested $400 in stock A.

The dividend from the investment in stock A is 0.05A.
The dividend from the investment in stock B is 0.10B.

Total dividend from A and B is 0.05A + 0.10B = 80
Total invested in A and B is A + B = 1000

There's your equations,. I'll leave the rest for you to do

a + b = 1000

a + 0.05*a = a(1 + 0.05)
= a*1.05
= 1.05*a (worth Stock-A by year's end)

b + 0.10*b = b(1 + 0.10)
= b*1.10
= 1.10*b (worth Stock-B by year's end)

now, since a + b = 1000 and since
total dividends = 80 by year's end, it follows that
1.05*a + 1.10*b = 1080.

But the first equation at the top is the same as saying that
b = 1000 - a.

Substituting 1000-a into
1.05*a + 1.10*b = 1080 gives us
1.05*a + 1.10*(1000-a) = 1080 which is the same as
1.05*a + 1100 - 1.10*a = 1080 which is the same as
1.05*a - 1.10*a = - 20 which is the same as
1.10*a - 1.05*a = +20 which is the same as
(1.10-1.05)*a = 20 which is the same as
0.05*a = 20 which is the same as
a = 20/0.05 or, as a banker would say:

investment in a = $400 <<== ANSWER!!

(and b = $600).
