We organized a program for elementary age children to meet once a week over the summer. The main organizer is our local sheriffs department and I would like to incorporate an activity involving police as the theme of the project. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Have the kids discuss ways the police help people, and then have them pick one of the ways and draw it.

Have each child color and decorate a pre-printed blank "police badge" which they can then have safety-pinned to their shirt as an "unofficial deputy" symbol.

If the children are too young to draw well or have experience with observing police, draw a big outline of a squad car and/or a uniformed sheriff or police man - or make small ones to hand out and have the kids observe and then color in the details. If they are somewhat older and the police are willing, then drawing pieces of equipment like belts, handcuffs, hats, etc. You will have to decide what to do about guns. Does the department do boat rescues or have a horse unit or dog handlers?

Have them draw or collect pictures of what they think a police officer's job is, or duties are, then make collages out of them and present them to the local Sheriff's Office as a way to thank them for sponsoring the program.

Maybe you could make a picture book (have each student draw a police related picture), bind it and present it to the sheriffs office as a thank you gift.

Well I am a teen. I clearly remember those days. Since they like to eat candy and things take a tooth pick and give them 2 marshmellows. Tell them to put them on the toothpick. Then, pass them out a sheet of paper and let them draw a cave. Then, tell them to put the marshmellow stick in the cave. explain to them about how bears go into their caves in winter. Then, let them eat the marshmellows.
