I am extremely ticklish and yet I could very rarely tick myself. I wonder if its all in your mind feeling ticklish when someone else does it.

The answer lies at the back of the brain in an area called the cerebellum, which is involved in monitoring movements. Studies at University College London have shown that the cerebellum can predict sensations when your own movement causes them but not when someone else does. When you try to tickle yourself, the cerebellum predicts the sensation and this prediction is used to cancel the response of other brain areas to the tickle.

I couldn't agree more with you on your ponderance of this strange little phenomenon. Ok it may not fall under 'phenomenon' criteria but it does in my book! Hey, I think if someone tickles you and you die from laughter and not breathing, and then you try to tickle yourself and nothing happens, that's pretty darned weird!!

Last week my friend Jessica gave me a massage and she went lower down my back on my sides where I'm most ticklish and I flopped like a fish all over the floor... We both had a good laugh.. Now though, when I poke, prod, jab and feather the same area, I get nothin'!!!

oh, I would never want to do that. I also imagine that your body understands when it touches itself...it is the sensation that it doesn't know what is happening that tickling comes from. Wow, that was a deep thought.

It has to do with your brain sending messages to your body to ignore you tickling yourself in case you were in danger or something like that.

Because part of tickling is not knowing where they are going to tickle.

i think because your brains knows it is you tickling you, where as if someone else touches you in a sensitive spot its a defense mechanism going off.. just a guess..

Because it's like stimulating yourself, it's better when someone else does it. They can find your weak spots better.
