Is there such a thing as valedictorian/salutatorian in college?

If so, is it valedictorian/salutatorian of your dept/major or your entire school?

Well, some universities rank students; most don't. I don't think it's really all that fair to be honest. Some majors are more difficult than others. My cousin graduated "first" in her class (but her major was accounting). She wasn't called valedictorian, though. For anyone who has taken accounting AND organic chemistry, you know they are not on par as far as difficulty goes.

In college though, you have university honors (summa and magna, for instance) , you don't have valedictorian/salutatorian.

Each school is different. Some universities are small enough to where they will have a valedictorian, which typically is the individual who has the highest GPA but is also the most well-rounded. For larger universities, the majors are broke into different colleges. For example, within the University of Texas there is the College of Engineering, College of Communication and the Business School. It would be impossible to find a single individual with the highest GPA since each college has different requirements and different weights against the GPA. So for larger schools, usually the student body president will give the commencement speech.

We have a valedictorian for the entire university. Students are nominated to prepare a speech and have to present it to a committee; then the committee chooses the one they think is best to be valedictorian.
