As a once dedicated fan, I'm quickly loosing interest in the show. The voting system definitely needs to be changed. I don't pretend to know the exact answers as to how to change things but it's a "no brainer" that it has to happen. I know the technology is there to limit calls. Maybe each phone number should be allowed one less call than the number of contestants. That way you could at least vote for all but one contestant. Your least favorite would not get a vote, or your favorite could get all your votes. I don't have the perfect answer, but I do know that if it isn't fixed I won't be watching next year. (Not that anyone really cares about that).
Truthfully I would rather even see an expanded group of judges make all the decisions than to have it continue the way it is now. The show is quickly becoming a joke!
However, they bring a lot of the "joke" on themselves throughout the audition process. I'm already not watching that anymore. Whoever decided to show all the crazies, and put them on tv is an idiot. I for one don't want to see them. As Simon has said... "it's a singing competition". The audition shows are not even worth my time anymore. I'd much rather see all, or most of the ones that get put through and NONE of the obvious rejects. Show us the people with singing talent only! I believe that alone would help rebuild some credibility.
But, bottom line... the voting system has to be changed!

I think something definitely needs to be done. It should be limited to no more than 10 votes or less. That's what Dancing with the Stars does... 10 votes per person.

I am extremely disappointed that American Idol has turned into such a joke this year. I didn't even watch the elimination Wednesday night because it's a waste of time. It's an insult to true musicians that Sanjaya continues to be voted through. For what?? Because he's a "nice kid" and his goofy hair?? I feel sorry for Gina and I am disappointed in America's Sanjaya fans for turning this into a circus. And Sanjaya's the clown standing there with that goofy demeaner and that ridiculous ponyhawk. All of a sudden American Idol is turning into a "REALITY SHOW" like what's on VH1 instead of the quality music show it ONCE was only a year ago. America, this isn't a "reality show" where everyone is supposed to act stupid and try to be something there not!! And that's exactly what Sanjaya does every week is come out and pretend to be someone he's not with those hairstyles. He's a 17 year old kid who should act like a 17 year old kid. This past week for example. I miss the Fantasia's, Kelly Clarkson's, Carrie Underwood, Ruben Studard's, Chris Daughtry, Bo Bice. Please start thinking about what American Idol really USED to be about. MUSIC AND A SINGING COMPETITION. Not reality TV. Sanjaya does not belong in this league vocally. He is not the next
American Idol. Melinda Doolittle is true American Idol quality. And there are about 3-4 others- Gina was one am I am disappointed in America for voting for someone you know really does not deserve to win. Intuitively you know it. And you create sites to vote for someone because he IS the worst while limiting chances to those who deserve to win because they are there for the RIGHT REASONS. They're not there for a hair styling competition. They are there because they've worked their a** off all their life to be where they are today. Give Sanjaya a chance to grow up a couple more years with this under his belt and see what he can do then. He's not ready for this. He is still very immature and it shows. How long was Melinda Doolittle a backup singer?? How long has she been a "performer" and an "artist." This is Melinda Doolittle's time to shine. Not Sanjaya. I really feel sorry for the idol's who have worked so hard to be faced with this "reality circus" over Sanjaya. He just didn't deserve to make it this far and Gina didn't deserve to go home last night. Sanjaya should have never even been in the top 24. What happened to the quality music show? That's all I want to know and that it should only be limited to 10 votes or less.

yes. they should adopt the voting process of "dancing with the stars" in that you only get a certain number of votes (per phone line and email address) depending on how many contestants are left (like if there was 10 contestants, you get 10 votes). of course people will always abuse this by voting from another phone or computer, but at least there is some sort of restriction. plus, america's votes only count for half of the dancers' total score so its fair because the judges play a huge part in choosing who makes it and who doesnt. in american idol, the judges are only there to critique and play no true part in the voting process. they should have a bigger role like the judges of "dancing with the stars." maybe if it was this way, idol right now would be more "correct" if you know what i mean.

I think it should limit one call per phone. Then, everyone in a home can have different opinions if they have cell phones and stuff. But some people call in over an over again, and then the votes aren't really even. They tip the scales, and it really isn't fair. so, if i have to choose 1 call per household or unlimited calls, i pick 1 per household. it makes the number of votes more realistic, and we can have a real majority vote. not a "maggie-moo won because sally-sue voted over 100 times over the course of this show"

Yes. Without a doubt one call per household/number should be allowed. That is the ONLY fair way for the contestants to be voted on. Plus, it would allow others to vote when all the lines are contantly busy because of multiple voters.

I believe that there should be a limit to how much one person can vote. But 1 is too low a limit. I would like to see 10 as the limit.

YES - if the idol judges want to truely see who America as a whole wants to listen to, then they will limit the votes. This current issue with Sanjya .. or however you spell his name .. proves that !
People who need to "vote for the worst" are just ignorant jerks. They dont care about their country or the negative publicity this is going to have on that young man's life. Let him be judged fairly by all. BUT ... If everyone else did the same as those on that website, well, who knows - maybe he will be gone soon !!!

Yes, by giving every phone number only 1 vote, it measures much more accurately what the public really thinks. Many contestents, this season and past seasons, only made it as far as they did because little teeny-boppers, who know nothing about music anyway, called dozens of times. There is no accuracy or true test of what America really believes the way the voting is set up at this moment.

I think that it is the only fair way to do it. Look at dancing with the stars. They only allow a certain number of votes and then the popular vote only counts for half and the judge scores count for the other half. That is fair.

Having multiple votes will be the demise of what was a great competition. Keep it simple and just one vote per person.
