I was told today from my AFP results were abnormal, I have a 1/55 chance of having a child with a neural tube defect. I was immediately scheduled for a level 2 ultrasound, and my physician said from the u/s everything looks good. He told me that I had the option of taking the amnio test to ensure everything was definitely okay. I'm not sure if I want to go through with this, seeing that the u/s was fine. The chances of miscarriages from the amnio test worries me. I don't want to put me or my baby through anymore stress. Should I go through with it? Thanks in advanced!

This is why I opted not to get that triple screen test done with both of my kids. They got you all worked up and there's nothing wrong with your baby! Don't do the amnio, there's too much risk and nothing to gain from it.

I took the following information from the website listed below. I encourage you to visit the site and become more informed before making your decision. Not to discourage you but there is a small risk that the needle could puncture the baby and cause injury or even death. This is a decision not to be made lightly.

Key points in making your decision:

This information will be helpful if you are trying to decide whether to have a diagnostic amniocentesis to test for certain types of fetal problems.

Consider the following when making your decision.

Amniocentesis is not a routine test because it does carry a small risk of miscarriage (1 in 200).1 Your decision lies in weighing the slight risk of miscarriage from amniocentesis against the information the testing can provide.
An amniocentesis can accurately detect many birth defects including Down syndrome, but it cannot rule out all problems or guarantee your baby will be free of all birth defects.
Knowing how you might handle news of a birth defect can help you decide whether to have an amniocentesis. If you would consider terminating a pregnancy with a serious birth defect, an amniocentesis is a useful test. If advance notice would help you cope with a sick, disabled, or dying newborn, an amniocentesis may also be useful for you. With early test results, you can also plan ahead to deliver in a specialized hospital, if needed.
Results from an amniocentesis may not be available until about 18 weeks of pregnancy. For some women who would consider terminating a pregnancy involving a birth defect, this may be too late in a pregnancy to do so. If this is the case for you, talk to your health professional about earlier testing, such as chorionic villus sampling.

O.k. the amnio is something that every gyno asks every pregnant patient if they want it. Yes there is some danger in it. I can't tell you what to do, but I can open your eyes to a few options. Hypothetically you got the test, something was wrong with your baby. How would you spend the rest of your pregnancy, upset, or happy? If you feel this could ruin your pregnancy, dont do it. You don't need to be upset.Honestly, i'd opt out of it. God is in control, I wouldnt worry about the future, i'd focus on the present, your pregnant, be happy!

The risk of a miscarriage with the amnio test is very small. It is up to you since the ultra sound was looked good.

I wouldn't chance a miscarriage for this. I waived that AFP test because it is wrong so many times. If there was a neuro-tube defect, like spinabifida, it would have shown up on the ultrasound.

good day, i'm additionally 18 weeks pregnant, and have been given a extreme risk for Down Syndrome after taking the quad/AFP attempt at sixteen weeks. My effects got here back one million:seventy one for an affected new child. i'm 33 years previous, so i replaced into shocked!! i replaced into informed that an amnio and a point 2 ultrasound have been elective yet tremendously recommended. I chosen to do the two. I merely have been given the outcomes back and the toddler (a woman!) is positive. I would desire to assert, thinking relating to the amnio replaced right into slightly frightening, yet I made the alternative and went with it. i'm so relieved now to understand what is going on. It takes 40 8 hours for the preliminary effects (that are ninety 5% precise) and 12 days for the applicable effects. What you make certain to do incredibly relies upon on your convenience point, yet once you have get admission to to a reliable medical institution with sensible team, the amnio won't be something to concern. desire that enables, reliable success.

when i had my last son, in august, the doctor not only asked me if i wanted to get the AFP test done, she also advised me against it! she told me that many, many women who have it done, often find that the test shows "positive" for some defect, and -almost- all of them worry over nothing! she also said that even a "small" something might show up and most of the time, ends up causing worry where none is due. i opted not to have it done because of that. ask your doctor more about this AFP test, and ask how many times this has showed positive in pregnancy and turned out to be wrong! in the meantime, try not to worry! (i know its very hard!) but pray alot, youll feel better! and you have me here praying for you and yours too! good luck! and GOD bless!

If you would NOT terminate the pregnancy because of a neural tube defect, then don't risk the test.

If it were me I would not do it. You could harm the baby and there could be nothing wrong. and what if you find out something is wrong, then what? will you abort it? if the answer is no then there is no need to do this and put the baby in potential harm
good luck
