Bra size has two parts: Bust size and cup size. Bust size is measured around the torso just underneath the breasts, while cup size is measured directly across the breasts.

The letters and numbers of the bra size add up to the bust size, within about an inch. The letter is the cup size, and it means the number of inches over the chest wall.
A = one inch
B = two inches
C = three inches
D = four inches
DD = five inches
So, 36C (one of the most common sizes) means that 36" + 3" = 39" -- this can be one inch smaller since bra sizes come only in even sizes, so someone might have to go up to a 36 if they measure at a 35.
