My neighbors' house got broken into last night, and I am now thinking about buying a gun for protection. I live alone, and I just want a gun just in case, any opinions?

Get a gun if you want to, but a phone and a good security system can do wonders. Call the police first when somebody tries to break in.

Suppose the criminals break in while you are at work. The last thing you want to give them is a firearm.

If you still want a gun, I recommend a shotgun for home defense. The sound of a shell being loaded into the chamber is a universal language. Plus you don't have to be as accurate, but they do make a mess.

Reguardless, of what weapon you choose, train with it, learn to maintain it propperly and know your local laws about discharging it within city limits.

A gun is useless without training, so you must be willing to commit yourself to range time. Like any martial art, practice makes perfect. While the first answerer pointed you in the right path his data is flawed. If you live in an apartment I would suggest a 12 or 20 guage shotgun. Loaded with #8 bird shot it will not, and I repeat will not penetrate 2 sheets of 5/8 inch drywall. Also there are few sounds in the dark more terrifying than the sound of a pump action shotgun. Handguns require a much higher level of training to become effective in a fight. In many cases, if you are unaquainted with firearms, you could defend yourself more effectively with a baseball bat. Rifles should be shunned if home defence is your only goal due to overpenetration concerns. All that being said I would now advise you to check out whats on the market, make an informed decision on what you want, buy it, and train, train, train. If you are committed to buying a firearm and want a free consultation I would be willing to do that for you. You can reach me at my Email. First, go to a range, several times, to see what guns can do. Second, know yourself: would you really use it if you had to, or would you just stand there shaking? Then, practice with as many different kinds of guns that may be practical. Then, buy what you want.

If it's house protection out in the boonies, you may want a rifle; in the 'burbs, maybe a 20-ga pump (my personal favorite). If you're in an apartment with sheetrock walls, you'll need special ammo for your handgun.

Learn the law.

...and practice!

If you do get one go to a gun safety course, ask your friends who have guns for some tips, and find a range to practice on. Also make sure your friends and family members know you have one so they don't try sneaking up on you in the middle of the night.

Someone tried to break into one of my friends apartments and the sound of pumping his shotgun was enough to make them leave.

You don't need a gun, you need a dog. Unless you are really proficient with a gun and can somehow carry it loaded at all times, it is worthless if an intruder gets the drop on you. Then if he finds your gun after getting the drop on you, it becomes even less than worthless...to you.

Most illegal home entries occur while the occupant is gone, so a gun won't help. Less than .5% occur while the occupant is home.

Seems like a good idea at first, like kicking Iraq's butt for 9/11 did.

However, statistically FAR more family members than intruders are wounded (on purpose or by accident) by guns in the home.
