McDonalds was founded by Ray Kroc, who is now deceased. The corporation is publicly held which means that is is owned by stockholders & run by a President with a Board of Directors. Individual restaurants (if you can really call them that) are owned by franchisees.

Jellybean has told you a little bit about McDonalds but going a bit further:

(1) McDonald's is a publiciy owned company. It is OWNED by the shareholders.

(2) At present shares are selling at $45 per share. You could have bought hem at $10 just a few years ago.

(3) Dividends are not high ($1) but capital gain makes them a good buy.

(4) In 2006 they sold $ 3½ BILLION in sales of products plus sales in BOSTON MARKET CHAIN which they own.

(5) McDoanld's profit in 2006 was 16.4 %

(6) The franchisees only own the franchise which is the privilege to sell McDonald's products but the franchisees HAVE to buy all the products from McDonald's ON WHICH the corporation makes a profit. So in a way McDonald's Corporation is the WHOLESALER of hamburger and salad products and the franchisee is the RETAILER of these products.

Individual restaurants are owned by either the main corporation or by a franchisee, who pays McDonald's corp. a certain amount of the store's profits. There is no way to tell from the store's appearance or menu selection who owns it-the difference is simply a private owner vs a corp store. The franchisee still has to comply with McD's sales rules and promotions, such as Monopoly, and purchase their food supplies from GSF, like all other stores. They have very little control over how things are done, which is why you can go to virtually any McD's on Earth and it will be basically the same.
