All they do is insert a speculum into your vagina to open it up so they can shine the light inside and make sure your cervix looks okay, they will then take a long swab and get a wipe of your cervix to be tested for diseases, then they take out the speculum and it's over. Not bad if you just relax and think about something else. If you tighten up it could pinch a little...try thinking about an episode of a funny show, anything but where you are and what's happening. Good Luck!

I've had a pap smear it is not painful at all.they just take a big Q-tip and rub it on your vagina wall and then they stick theire fingers in ther at the same time they push down on the top of your uterus. It is just uncomfortable having someone sticking their finger in there when it's not your men lol.But otherwise it's pain free.there will be a female nurse there to make sure the doctor doesn't get freaky. They are just checking for cancer and if you are under 25 or ask for it they check for STD.after you have kids you have to get a pap smear every year.

I had a pap smear done before. It doesn't hurt at all. your Dr will give you a topical cream to make the instrument go in easier.

I didn't not have any complications, it felt a little weird, but other than that it was fine.

Don't worry. You'll be fine. It's really important to get one done.

No there are no complications. They gently insert a small instrument which they expand a little so they can see the tip of your uterus to get a swab of cells with kind of long Q tip. They smear the cells on a small piece of glass and send it to the lab for microscopic evaluation. I don't recalling it ever hurting at all. Embarrassment and being tense are your worst enemies.

No, it doesn't hurt at all. It just feels like a stretching and maybe a pinch--really. It is more embarrassing than anything. No complications, ever, and I"ve had way more than a dozen.

Don't worry ... nothing to it.

You might be more comfortable with a woman doctor, though some male dr's try harder to be gentle.

It does not hurt. May be slightly uncomfortable. The worse thing is the embarrassment. But it is worth getting done as it will be a whole lot worse if abnormal cells go undetected. It's just another one of those things that women have to endure. Don't put it off. You hear of too many women who are too embarrassed to get them done and now it's too late for them.

no it doesn't really hurt, just the thought of it mostly ,just try an relax if you tense up it will be worse, relax and let your mine try and think of something else,I was 15 pregnant and my first time was so embarrassing no one talked to me how it would be ,I was scared to death but got through it ,2 more children it still is embarrassing but necessary to make sure you don't have cancer and to catch it in time, some people wait too long and then nothing can be done to help them,so be sure an get it done every year, relax ,it will be over pretty fast.you will be OK ,good luck.

Its not that bad. It is intrusive and your first one sucks a lot, It doens't hurt, not comfortable but not painful.
No complications, and I have never heard of anyone having any.
You need a swab inserted in you to test for all kinds of diseases and abnormal cells, but I promise you will be fine!
Good Luck and Great Job doing something good for yourself!!

Go to a gynecologist...it's not painful. Relax as much as possible. The doctor will insert a speculum...but it's not sharp and does not cause pain

there is a little pressure when it is done=the most problem will be your embarrassment if this is your first time=remember that pap tests help prevent cervical cancer and try to relax=I know ,easier said then done
