yeah, loud pipes don't save any lives, because you can't even hear the loud pipes until AFTER it passes you, and if you have to be loud to feel good, you've got problems, and if that's the only way you think "chicks" "dig" you, then you have even more problems.

I agree with Valley R. I had a loud pipe on my bike the previous owner had on it. When I rode with it, I couldn't hear anything through my helmet but my pipe. Even my buddy hated following behind me on his bike as all he could hear was my bike when I was in front. Also the local athourities loved to see whom they should pull over, especially around popular bike scenes. The guy I got my bike from even admitted the pipe wasn't as loud when he first got it. I can't stand excessively loud bikes, so I bought a stock pipe off e-bay and installed it with the quickness. I was surprised how much more I was now able to hear while riding. Being aware of your surrounding involve more than sight. Sound plays a crucial part too. Now you can hear the cop or CHP's siren as he passes you up to go chase down that other loud pipe. :)

The number one reason a person in a car says when they hit a bike is I didn't see them. The sound of a bike saves lives. Plane and simple. You may not have seen my very big red bike but you heard it. What I hate is people in cars with their radios they are louder than any bike. I hate cell phones, when someone is talking their brain stops and they do the stupidest things. Kids, dogs, eating, drinking, reading, putting on make up, changing closes, all these things are distraction from driving but people still do them while driving in a car. If you want to complain, complain about them not us when we drive we are driving not doing everything else as well. I have never seen a motorcycle driver multi-task like drivers in cars do.

Your tone is very mocking. People whether misguided or not do like loud pipes to get noticed. It's not about being tough or getting chicks it's about not getting dead. You might not be safe from that car going the other direction but the noise will make people check their blind spot before they do a lane change into you.
I don't think your cool. I think your wording of this question was a little insulting.

Loud bikes are why so many areas are now restricted for use. Not only will an excessively loud bike make you look like an ***, You are helping to give all motorcyclists the poor image you choose for yourself... With the exception of a few classic Harley-Davidsons(which deserve to be a lil bit loud) a loud bike is just plain negative attention...

There is a guy who rides his cruiser to campus, and his bike got keyed one day... a deep mark down the side of the tank. He thought someone was irritated at his loud pipes... which were loud enough at idle to set off the moped alarms by the motorcycle parking.

I ride a Harley and like the louder rumble of the engine. But, there are some of my fellow riders whose bikes are way to loud. They ride down the street setting off car alarms. If you ride behind them on a trip it is very annoying. There is no consideration for others with excessive noise, especially the non-motorcyclists. Now many of these non-motorcyclist are trying to have laws passed to ban load pipes and certain communities have even posted off limit signs for motorcycles. ABATE is supporting the banning of excessive noise producing pipes because the number of riders are increasing and the noise is increasing. We need to consider others if we want to continue enjoying our freedom. Every year our city has bike week and when you have thousands of motorcycles coming in and driving all hours of the night setting off your alarms, it makes it difficult to sleep at night. I enjoy the roar of the motorcycle as you hear it come down the road but trying to be the loudest on the block does not make you the favorite neighbor in the neighborhood. One of my neighbors must either drink til 2am or work 2nd shift, He wakes everybody up when he comes home every night. Thank God for the winter months when he doesn't ride. My problem is my neighbors know I ride and don't look at me any different than they do the other guy. I ride with stock pipes and have not altered the sound at all, in fact there are those who tell me, "Your bike doesn't sound like a Harley." Stock pipes are not the loud pipes you are refering to, Harley sells load pipes because there is a demand for them and some guys will even remove the baffles out of these pipes as well to make them even louder. People associate us with the same ones who ride the bikes with loud pipes. Put the blame where blame is due. By the way, more and more crotch rocket riders are doing the same because they like the whining sound they make, this is just as annoying. I have even met a few OTH's (other than Harley owners) doing the same to their bikes and since the makers are styling them after the Harley style, if you didn't know any better you would assume they were Harleys. One on my fellow riders has a Boulevard with bored out pipes and when I first saw him on it, I thought he bought a new Harley. It's a trend that seem to affect all bikers, maybe to call attention to themselves or they are Harley Wanabe's? Here in PA it is no different than the teenagers with their Honda Civics with loud pipes racing down the streets or reving up their engines or squealing their wheels to impress their friends.

You can be pulled over by a cop if it is too loud. He'll make you park it -- and then you'll have to get it towed to the shop to get the original pipes put back on. Bummer, huh?

You could get slapped with noise violations. Definitely not cool. There are a lot better ways of irritating people than contributing to noise pollution and a lot less expensive.
