Honeybee, I am pretty much an old woman now. However, that does not erase all memories-lol. When I was in college, I had a professor who explained how statistics can be used to justify anything. To compare the current world situation today with the one we faced in the l940's is quite the over-simplification of facts. Quite frankly, I think that all wars are a bad thing. I know that no one cares what I think but I fail to see the benefit of killing each other when negotiations could do the trick. I fail to see the benefit of spreading our forces to the point of exhausting our resources and I fail to see the point of this question. I thought it was to make people think and then when I saw your response to some of the answers--I realized that your "point" was not to see what others were thinking but to attempt to tell them their thoughts were "wrong". Honeybee, when you get some age on you will then recognize that some things are simply true. All Politicians lie- War is never a "good" thing only a necessary thing--Some people will fight with a fencepost.

This is a relative question because the history is writing according the winners of the wars. For example: Do you think the Hispanic-American war is justifiable? If you are an American your answer will be yes, but if you are a Spaniard or even a Cuban or Puerto Rican the answer maybe is No.
There's a great difference between the World War 2 and the invasion to Iraq.

Hmmm tough one. In my little idealized view of the world, no war is ever necessary. However . . . . I'm discovering that world leaders aren't the smartest, most patient people. They are often not open to true compromise. Plus, power corrupts, and world leaders are truly representative of that saying. So, justifiable, maybe WWII. Avoidable, all of them.

EDIT: Saddam and Hitler aren't really comparable for one simple reason: numbers.

The one that made this country - The Revolutionary War.

The one that allowed us to finally keep this country - The War of 1812.

The one that allowed me to do what you do - The Civil War.

The one that stopped Germany, Japan, and Italy from killing Jews and ruling the world - WWII

The one that finally allowed the poor a say - The French Revolution.

Those are some I can think of right now, but I understand your feelings about war when bush has placed this country in a war for no reason.

EDIT: Saddam is gone. When Hitler was gone, we prosecuted and left. Why are we still in Iraq?

Why must you conflate Democrats with liberals? For example, I may be a Democrat but I am most certainly not a liberal.

Would you consider such Democrats as Andrew Jackson, Woodrow Wilson, FDR, Harry Truman, JFK or LBJ dovish or weak on defense? Jackson was a former general who; as general destroyed a British army at the Battle of New Orleans during the War of 1812, killed at least two men in duels and as President threatened to lead a federal army into South Carolina if they tried to secede from the Union. Wilson got the US into WW1 for very specious reasons and under his administration the US intervened overseas more times than in any other administration. FDR had to prepare for WW2 in a discreet manner due to GOP opposition and when war finally came, he led the political fight brilliantly. Truman ordered the only use of nuclear weapons in recorded history. JFK founded the Green Berets and got the Soviets to back down and remove the missiles from Cuba. And LBJ kicked Ike's Vietnam War into full gear. I mean, don’t you remember Bob Dole’s debate gaff about “Democrat Wars”?

Can you even honestly say that the point of this question is an honest exploration of the opinions of those on the left side of the aisle, be they Democrats, Liberals, or both? I’ll do you the justice of assuming that your question is an honest one. Just keep in mind that I can’t answer for liberals, or even all Democrats.

Any wars in all of history? Well, I was a history major when I studied in school as an undergraduate, so perhaps I can name more wars than you can. Nevertheless, I do not have time or inclination to catalog any and every war in all of history.

Most wars are not justifiable but many are.

The “Just War” doctrine established by the Roman Catholic Church and adopted by much of the civilized Western World is quite helpful here. Just wars have several components that make them so, all of which I won’t go into here. Some of the characteristics include; every reasonable effort must be made first to avoid war, the preservation of life sought by beginning the war must outweigh any possible loss of life through the warfare, a logical end to the war must be clearly thought out before the war begins, (victory doesn’t cover this characteristic either).

Let’s do just US history. Revolutionary War, as we were fighting for our independence. Our military conflict against the Barbary Pirates, as we were defending the safety of our citizens abroad. War of 1812, for our continued independence and national sovereignty. Civil War, to keep our country together as a functioning nation. WW2, it needs no explanation but…we were attacked by Japan and Germany declared war on us. Korea, we were defending a sovereign nation from outside Communist military invasion. Gulf War, again, defending a sovereign nation from a foreign aggressor. Our intervention in Kosavo as well, we stopped a near genocide with no loss of life for our military.

And there you are, and that’s just a short list off the top of my head. I’m not going to examine every single minor military intervention in US history.

Edited to say: There is no comparing Saddam to Hitler, none whatsoever. First of all, we let Hitler do whatever the hell he wanted to do, including kill innocent civilians, until he declared war on us. Second, Saddam never sought world-wide conquest. Third, Saddam was not a genocidal dictator. He was a mass-murdering dictator, but there are lots of those still in power today. Saddam is serving hot drinks to Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot in hell right now. And on that note, as posters have already said, he’s dead. When Hitler was dead, the war in Europe was over.

And yes, there is a difference between hate and the truth. There is also a difference between an educated opinion backed up by facts and an uneducated opinion clouded by ideology.

WWII is the only one during the last century. Our revolutionary war and the civil war. I think they are all self explanatory.
Hitler wasn't only exterminating Jews. He was taking over europe by invading every country there. He was also patrolling our shorelines. HE DECLARED WAR ON US. And, WWII wasn't only Germany but it was Japan as well. You know Japan don't you? The country that actually DID bomb our shores. Where as Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11.

World War II, beyond a shadow of a doubt. And I think the present war on terror may very well turn out to be even more important in the great scheme of things. I think the historians of the future will look at it quite differently than our media is doing at present.

World War II,

The Nazi movement had to be stopped. The genocide of millions of Jews,(for no other reason than for being one). The tyranny and occupation of countless other country's. The so called "Master Race" had to be stopped.
