i think everyone has a little depression from what ever is going through their lives, but i dont think it needs to be treated with some kind of fancy "anit-depressan" drug. i think it is just a mteer of how you think of things and it takes the inner self to do that...but saying that ur depressed is only making u more depressed

I think there's a certain truth to this. There are such things as chemical imbalances, though, and these can cause depression. Even then, you can regulate your own feelings to an extent. I think that drugs make things worse chemically by replacing your body's natural chemicals with outside sources, which means that your body now relies on something outside of itself that won't always be there.

I agree with what everyone has said. There are some instances when medication is not needed. Everybody goes through a hardship every now and then, doesn't necessarily make them "depressed". I had/have severe depression and was put on anti-depressants for awhile, until I noticed that I couldn't seem to feel any kind of emotion, at which point, i took myself off the medication, not exactly, wise, but I continued with therapy, and I feel I'm much more healthier mentally, without the medicine, although i still go through depressive states.

I agree with the above answers, however I would like to add something.

There is a difference between situational depression(because there is something going on to make you feel this way-which is normal) and clinical depression(a constant feeling of depressive symptoms for no particular reason or event). Also, the term "depression" is a broad area, there are many depressive disorders which need to be treated with medication.

Unfortunately for those individuals who suffer from more serious forms of depression, it's not just something you can "snap out of". I do feel that for most people with single episodes of depression, therapy can be effective. For those who suffer from other forms like clinical depression both medication therapies as well as individual therapy is the most effective.

Antidepressants can be overused, however, they do help many people and for some cases should not be the first treatment that is utilized.

However, please consider that depression is a powerful thing and many people who suffer from it are not just "sad", they can be physically affected, self injurious or in severe cases suicidal. Therefore it's impact should not be underestimated.

IMO, "antidepressant" drugs should be used only in extreme situations & for limited periods along with therapy. Too many people become dependent on these (& similar) drugs & never learn how to cope with daily stresses w/o being drugged. Not to mention, some unfortunate side effects of these drugs. Apparently, some lower the patient's inhibitions to a point that they behave as though they are intoxicated. Many children have also suffered psychosis as a result of antidepressants.

yes.u r right. But, can i give u some logics behind it?

Suppose, u got admission in a school....now, whats the pourpose of getting admission in any school? u will go there, learn. Now, if u go to school every day, but u dont know ur pourpose to be in school and pass ur time all day by roaming on the school field and gossiping with friends slowly u will become frustrated, right? coz, for what pourpose u r here, u cant find that pourpose....u r wasting time for nothing.

same, we r in world.....Allah made us giving us some pourpose; unfortunately, today u forgot all purposes of life and wasting life is useless things...how long we can be happy doing so? so, we r getting frustreated. Nothing is able to make us rejoice again...movies, songs...nothing! And, look around u the society-----is there anything r4e4ally to not make u frustreated? things r worsen!

we should find out our real pourpose of life....and, work according to that....so, we wont b frustreated. Gurannted!

"Depressed" is not the same as "depression". And "depression" does not necessarily require medication.

"Depressed" is only "depression" when it is pathological: meaning it has been significantly interfering with work, family, social interactions, etc., for a specified period of time, and is not a result of bereavement. Go to your local library and get a book called the DSM, version 4-R I think is the latest one, but ask and they'll tell you.
