American Idol lets viewers call in to vote for the singers. I believe they keep track on how many call in to vote.

Have you heard of the Nielson ratings system? It is a tool that they use to see what percentage of the public is watching a certain show at a certain time. A long time ago the system was that a chosen home kept as accurate a log as possible of what they watched and how much they watched and when they watched. As the machines became better the chosen homes got a bos that monitered your viewing habits and sent that information to the home office. They put the devices in a select demographic that is supposed to show the percentage for the country. It really is only a very educated guess.

Check this site out to see how Television ratings are calculated, but I'm not too sure about how american idol is claiming all those viewers. They say 33 million votes, but I doubt 33 million people actually voted.

they use the Nielson ratings, which in my opinion is a faulty system. it works by putting trackers in some hundred thousand households and taking down the info of what they watch. by using this data, they assume the rest of the country corresponds and comes up with an estimated number. it does not take into account the number of people watching each tv set though, which in my opinion makes it very faulty. for example, sports games are often watched in groups and shows like american idol in families. because of this, the ratings can be off, but to what extent no one knows.

i'm guessing they have some sort of call counter so whenever a call is connected it counts it as "one viewer".
